Getting to enjoy the taste of durian is actually an acquired taste just like drinking beer or wine. There are many varieties some more pungent than others. The smell actually heightens the tasting experience. For someone trying to eat durian for the first time; i suggest that starting with candies made from durian then durian ice cream would be good. It prepares you for the experience of actually eating the real fruit. Most locals in the southern city of Davao City in the Philippines which is famous for a very pungent but tasty local variety of durian; say that it may be an aphrodisiac too.

it absolutely tastes better than it smells! it has a mildly sweet taste, a custardy texture and a very distinctive pleasant flavor. it helps to inhale little while eating it, just in case the smell is too much for you. the best and most non-invasive way of eating durian? it's durian ice cream! all the great durian taste without the stench! :-)

I ate durian when I went to Vietnam a few years ago. It has a kind of tangy custard taste. Very good.
