Not very popular in the US. Many Americans look down their noses at vegetarian food, and many others can't handle spicy foods... that means they won't eat about 60% of Indian cuisine. The other 40% they're just afraid to try.

I can only really speak about the US, but there are many Indian restaurants in many parts of the US, especially in the larger cities and near the east & west coasts.

There are 5 Indian restaurants within 5 kilometers from my office, which is near Boston.

There are more than 25 Indian restaurants listed in Zagat guide for Boston and more than 40 in the Zagat guide for New York City.

I live in Canada and I think most people are really open to different foods. Tomorrow we are actually having an office lunch at a local Indian restaurant and last time we went everyone loved it.

I just ate samosas yesterday!
Indian cuisine is gaining in popularity as Americans are becoming more adventurous and Indian Restarants are opening in smaller towns.
I would not call it popular yet.

Here in Colorado (Denver/Boulder area) it is somewhat popular, there are quite a few Indian restaurants and most of them are always fairly busy.
