You need to see a doctor and have them run some tests to make sure that you don't have a heart condition. However the muscle spasm in the chest wall is a distinct possibility as is another condition. The other condition is called costochondritis, which is when the cartiliage between the rib bones and breast bone is inflamed. I have had that condition for nearly 30 years and there are times that if I didn't know what it was I would swear I was having a heart attack. The pain can become so severe I actually have trouble breathing. But because it could be a serious problem, such as something involving your heart you need to see a medical professional for a complete exam, including a Holter monitor. That is a monitor that you wear for 24 hours, it monitors your heart, so the doctor can tell if there is a problem that may not have shown up in his office. Good luck, hope you find out what is wrong.

If you have a terrible chest pain during the all day or during the night, with difficulty to breath, and stay awake, bad circulation in the legs and general pain in your body and in your back...

It means that you are able to get a heart attack in these days, check with your doctor and if they found that you are having a serious problem in your heart, they will make a treat during your proccess... I hope not! But it's the true..

ive heard its because the membrane that surrounds your lungs rubs up against another membrane layer, but i dont know if thats true or not. i know what you mean though, i get that a lot too. i just suck air in really fast and kind of feel a pop then it doesnt hurt anymore. i dont think its anything serious, and i know its not angina or a heart attack as some of the other answerers are saying...

I suffer from both esophageal spasms, and gastritis attacks... they both are as painful as a mild heart attack, and they both take my breath away... they can (and have) last(ed) anywhere from 5 minutes, to 5 hours. Talk to your primary physician. don't come here for a diagnosis, you won't get one.

Spasms, prolly got your rib stuck in a funky place. There are organs there right next to your rib cage.
