i'm just curious why gay men are more likely to contract the hiv virus than hetero couples. is there something in the act of gay intercourse that causes the disease? is it just a coincidence?

This is a myth that started in the U.S. because here in the 80's the first population that was exposed to the HIV virus was gay men. Obviously, the virus spread within that community since it was then an unknown quantity. However, in Japan, it was most prevalent within the non-gay community, passed on a lot by businessmen frequenting prostitutes and others. In other countries, HIV infection (AIDS) is mainly a disease found in the non-gay (heterosexual) populations because those are the first ones exposed to the virus. AIDS is a disease caused by a virus which shuts off the immune system.

A non-gay individual may or may not have been exposed to the virus. If not, then there is no way for that person to pass the virus to anyone else, no matter what sexual activities they enjoy. Similarly, a gay individual may or may not have been exposed to the virus. If not, there is no way to pass the virus on to anyone else, again, no matter what sexual activities they enjoy.

The problem becomes - have you, non-gay, gay, or anything else -- been exposed to the virus? That can only be found thru testing.

So to answer your question explicitly. There is nothing in gay intercourse that causes the disease, anymore than there is anything in straight intercourse that causes it. It's simply a virus that is passed.

Gay men are not more likely to contract HIV than anyone else, at the moment the largest growing population of new HIV infections is heterosexual females ages 18-25. In fact homosexual men are now less likely to contract HIV.
Also most homosexual men do not participate in anal sex as much as people seem to think, it is usually oral/manual stimulation.

It's because of the anal sex, yes. The lining of your rectum is very, very thin, and can tear easily, opening up the pathway to the bloodstream. This allows the HIV virus to enter the body easily.
