Like all things in medicine it is usually clear cut - if you're sugar is sky high and you are acutely ill, and you fit the profile, you are almost certainly type 1. If your sugars creep up over years, and you feel fine, and you fit the profile, you're almost certainly type 2. Then there's the in betweeners. Type 1 diabetics make no insulin at all. Type 2 diabetics still make insulin, but their bodies can not use it correctly. That is a basic, simple explanation of it. The test doctors do to diagnose diabetes can tell the difference between T1 or T2.

Your age has no bearing on whether you are type 1 or type2. There are risk factors where diabetes can develop at a later age or you can be born with type1 or 2. When they are testing you they determine that based on whether your pancreas is producing insulin or not. If it is not, you are type 1, insulin dependant, if it is producing insulin but it is not getting through your body, then you are type 2, usually pill and diet controlled.
