A prediabetic is a person who has blood sugars that are borderline high. This person should be placed on a diet that would restrict caloric intake and cause weight loss if the person is overweight. Also, the blood sugar levels should be monitored and tested at home and in the doctor's office. Special care should be given to the diet and getting into shape physically. Blood Pressure should be monitored and medicated if necessary. Cholesterol levels should be determined for many prediabetics have High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol and Fats in their blood tests. Bood Sugar levels over the years have been trending lower to make a diagnosis. Their are other tests that can help determine if a person is truly a prediabetic such as Human Growth Hormone Levels and levels of Insulin and Preinsulin in the Blood.

If your fasting blood glucose levels are between 111mg/dl and 125mg/dl , you have prediabetes (diabetes is diagnosed when the fasting blood glucose levels are 126mg/dl or higher), or impaired glucose tolerance. This means your body doesn't use insulin to process glucose as efficiently as it should, but it is not yet causing glucose to build up in the blood at levels that indicate diabetes. However, prediabetes is a serious risk factor for Type 2 diabetes and it should never be ignored. You can delay and possibly prevent Type 2 diabetes by treating prediabetes through healthy eating and planned exercise.

If you are prediabetic the only treatment is to change your lifestyle by healthy eating and getting active. This does not mean "dieting" it mean an over all change to your lifestyle that you will have to continue for the rest of your life.

Impaired Glucose Tolerance is the medical term for "prediabetic." Normal glucose is defined as less than 100, and diabetes is greater than 126. between that is "prediabetes." Basically, it means that your body is not using glucose effectively the way it should, but it is not as bad as being a diabetic. treatment basically involves sensitizing your body: proper diet and plenty of excercise. Drugs are not used until you meet the definition of diabetes, and even then, diet and exercise can still be effective enough control to not need drugs.

If only I could of been a "Pre-Diabetic" I would have tought of it as a blessing!
I could of left the Doctors office and walked the 10 miles home, I could of stopped at the farmers market to eat a frest picked tomatoe, peach, onion (well maybe not raw!) & a large glass of water. Then I could of read all the information about it and saved my family from the horror of the way I have to now live, because of the type 1 diabetes all the shots & blood sugar testing, and the blindness and the dialysis every other day in the town next over, Oh and I can't forget the major heart attack 2 weeks age that left me with a droppy lip!
Sorry no sugar coating here.... Pre diabetes is just a nice way for your body to tell you something is going to change with you or without you!

in my opinion, there is no "prediabetic"...you are either diabetic or you aren't. prediabetic came about because some people have slightly elevated blood sugar levels but don't want to be called diabetic. instead, the doctors give them the same managment they would a diabetic and tell them that if they don't change, they will become "diabetic" even though they are already diabetic but don't want to hear it. anything outside the normal periameters is what it is. if you're blood sugar is not normal, then you are diabetic. work on it and control it while it is still early and maintain it so your blood sugar will not go up higher and higher making your doctor prescribe medications or insulin to control your diabetes.

Note to "itskind2bcruel": Your opinion doesn't matter in the light of medical definition. There is such a thing as a prediabetic and it's a term we apply to certain patients. And it was beautifully explained by "J".
