Yes, a friend of mine didn't know she had Type I diabetes until she got pregnant at 26! But, she's gotten used to it and just had her 3rd baby!!!

Type 1 diabetes usually occurs between the ages of 5 and 21 but rarely in people over 40. Peak ages are when kids start or change schools lending credence to the theory that it is caused by a virus of some kind.
Type 1 is charachterised by a complete ceasation of insulin production by the pancreas unlike type 2 where some insulin is still produced

I got Type 1 diabetes at 2 1/2 years old (39 years ago). But, doctors and researchers are noticing that Type 1 is showing up in adults (18 on up) and Type 2 is showing up in children (under 18). So, yes you can get Type 1 later in life.

While it is unlikely that juvenile diabetes, also called Type 1 and IDDM (Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) will develop after childhood, a form of insulin dependent diabetes can occur in later life in adults with Type 2.

And, yes, a 16-yr-old is still a child and can be diagnosed with it.

Yes. My brother developed type 1 in his 30's. I'm also type 1 diabetic and was diagnosed at the age of 16, I'm now 45 and happy.

Yes, you can. Although Type 1 is sometimes referred to as "Juvenille Diabetes", it does not mean that you cannot contract it after your childhood.

There are 80 year olds who are diagnosed with Type 1, although it is sort of uncommon.

The average onset for Type one diabetes is around age 11-13. It's unlikely that you could get it much later than that.
