Peanuts, which are really not nuts, grow on vines underground. Peanuts are in the legume family. The mass production of them in the South came about because growing cotton for 100+ years had leached all of the minerals from the soil. George Washington Carver introduced the idea of crop rotation to farmers during the depression as a way to help the soil regain its vitality. There are approx. 15,000 peanut farms and, more than 50% of the peanuts in the USA come from south GA. and wind up as peanut butter.
