Because in this stage of life you need to have an identity, and a sense of acceptation. This is also called the stage of the invencibility. Teenagers just think that they are invencible because they are young and think that nothing negative will happen to them. There is a peer pressure, and if the teenager is easily manipulated, have family problems, identity problems and a low self esteem will eventualy end using and abusing alcohol.
It is the way they use to escape from the reality. As a result there are unplanned pregnancies, rapes and STDs. To avoid this parents should talk frankly to their teenagers about alcohol, drugs and sex. School should teach a course of this topics. Parents should watch their teenagers behavior and peers.

I think that teenagers mainly do it because they think that it is rebellious to some extent.
They want to break away from their parents kind of 'shell'.
The think that it's cool to abuse their body, just for the heck of it. It's also influence and up bringing in some cases.
Peer pressure.

Sorry, my answer probably doesn't make much sense, it's pretty mixed and kind of 'pointish' but hope this is okay.

Peer Pressure, Boredom, Rebellion

In part it could be peer pressure. It could also be that blatant "I do what I want" syndrome. But really, I was just experimental. I don't like to knock things until I try them, and, by that rule, I usually didn't trust people that bad-mouthed things they'd never tried. I think it has everything to do with gaining further knowledge of the world and questioning the authority in that world.
