Pneumonia is an infection of the lung that can be caused by nearly any class of organism known to cause human infections. These include bacteria, amoebae, virus- es, fungi, and parasites. In the United States, pneumonia is the sixth most common disease leading to death; 2 million Americans develop pneumonia each year, and 40,000–70,000 die from it. Pneumonia is also the most common fatal infection acquired by already hospitalized patients. In developing countries, pneumonia ties with diarrhea as the most common cause of death. Even in nonfatal cases, pneumonia is a significant economic burden on the health care system. One study estimates that people in the American workforce who develop pneumonia cost employers five times as much in health care as the average worker. Pneumonia is suspected in any patient who has fever, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, and increased respirations (number of breaths per minute). Fever with a shaking chill is even more suspicious. Many patients cough up clumps of sputum, commonly known as spit. These secretions are produced in the alveoli during an infection or other inflammatory condition. They may appear streaked with pus or blood. Severe pneumonia results in the signs of oxygen deprivation. This includes blue appearance of the nail beds or lips (cyanosis).

Get to the doctor! Usually the pain would be on your lower right side in the back. Do you have a fever? Can you hold your breath to the count of at least 20? When you cough is there a girgling sound? Can you lie down without it hurting? Do you have shortness of breath? Don't be afraid to have this check out. You deserve the best for you. It may be a bruise but why not put your mind at ease?

A good way of knowing if it is your lungs as oppose to your heart would be that if it only hurts while taking a deep breath, it is most likely your lung. If it hurts continuously, possibly your heart. It very well could be your lungs, whereas one cigarette is too much. In either case you need to visit the doctor IMMEDIATELY. NEVER put off any type of chest pain! Time is of the essence. If it is pneumonia, the doc will probably start you on some antibiotics (depending on the type of pneumonia) and possibly some bronchodilator (breathing treatments) in the case that your lungs are wheezing. Hope this helps you at all. Hope you get to feeling better real quick. God Bless

I dont think that is is pneumonia, when I got that, I had really high fever andit felt like I had strep throat, and I had a really hard time breathing. It is probably best to have a doctor see what it is, because that is a hard thing to diagnose over the internet

If you are coughing and you are coughing hard it sounds more like you have strained your chest muscles, this will cause the pain in your chest and back and it will feel like a bruise.
I would find a decongestant and if that does not break it up seek medical advice.

After a week of symptoms that don't go away or worsen, you should immediately see a doctor. It could be pneumonia or it could be nothing or it could be something worse. It's better safe than sorry b/c my friends mom had pneumonia and got another infection and died suddenly all because she thought it was just a "cough". Please take care of yourself.
