There are no risks if you eat properly. Thats goes for everyone..not just vegetarians.

Protein is found in almost everything so it's really hard not to get enough.

If you follow the Vegetarian food pyramid guidelines, then you'll be perfectly OK. Whole grains, Vegetables and leafy greens, Beans and fruits are what everyone should be getting more of anyway. If you are lacto-ovo, cheese, yogurt and eggs are great sources of many nutrients as well. Be aware though that you have to read labels on cheese and yogurt as many contain animal rennet and gelatin. Do a search on animal rennet free cheeses and you can get a list of the companies. The only supermarket brand of yogurt that I know of that contains no gelatin is Stonyfield Farms.

There are no risks!
That's just a stoopid rumour spread around by Butchers, fast food outlets & meat eaters.
I've been a Veggie for over TEN years.
My Doc tells me I'm far healthier than most of his over-weight & meat-eating patients. Eating meat, too much of it can make you fat.
You want to /thinking about going Veggie just do it YOU will feel so much better within weeks of skipping the meat.

Greatest risk would have to be becoming a lame-arsed vegan.Yo.
Vegetarianism is a noble and healthy diet choice as long as you balance your diet. Watch out for the estrogen levels in soy products. And don't look down or preach at meat eaters. Watch out for vegans though, because they are hypocritical extremists.

Absolutley no risks, only benefits. There are a lot of misinformed people. If someone says the "lack of protien" line, just remind them that fat americans that are malnourished suffer from lower protien than vegetarians usually. In fact, most americans have TOO MUCH protien which starts to leach calcium from your bones. Meat eaters have, at any given time, 3 lbs. of undigested meat in their intestines. Most american meat eaters will die with that or more in their systems. Not eating meat takes pressure of your digestive, will help you lose that excess junk inside and reduces risks of osteoperosis. You will also be reducing your risk of injesting harmful drugs since meat is literally shot full of drugs now. You will help reduce world hunger, help the planet by not contributing to excess oil waste (the beef pig and chicken industries use more oil than any other industries with their inefficient farms and antiquated shipping). If people try to scare you with lack of B6 and/or B12 gently remind them that you know how to take a supplement. Thanks to the stripping of our once nutrient rich soil for mass producing cows, no one can really get B12 from the earth any more. Gee, USA, thanks. You will reduce your risk for colon cancer and heart disease and since you will also be reducing your risk for obesity your chances of developing diabetes will go down too. PS, I am a second generation vegetain and I am strong healthy and full of energy. My husband, kids, some in-laws,and most friends are all vegetarians. We rarely get sick and are all around healthy. Both my husband and I are physical in our jobs and have to maintain a level of fitness in order to work, in fact, I maintain more muscle tone than a lot of MEN my age (who are often fat) and I've had children.

Rice and bean combos are better protein then many meats. B-12 is what you have to watch.
