Bacon is plainly bad for you so living without it is a better choice obviously.

How do vegetarians get nutrients? From the same places you do except some come from different sources.

Whole grains like Pasta, rice, bread, cereal. Vegetables/leafy greens, beans, fruits. Google "vegetarian food pyramid" to get more of an idea. It's just like the "regular" food pyramid minus the meat.

Everything you eat has nutrients and most Americans don't get nearly enough of most of them anyway.

What I want to know is --

Why do some people who are morally opposed to eating meat enjoy "imitation meat" products specifically made to resemble flavors and textures of animal flesh, like "Fakin Bacon," "Tofu Pups," and a host of other "simulated" meat products too numerous to list like veggie crumbles (sub for crumbled ground beef) "soysage" (sub for sausage) etc etc etc???

If a person is truly morally opposed to eating animal flesh, shouldn't they be equally disgusted by products that imitate meat?

I'm not asking about people who pursue a veggie lifestyle for dietary or other reasons, like sustainability issues and others. I'm only asking the rabid PETA heads. I know many people -- friends even -- who are vehemently opposed to slaughter of animals for any purpose including meat production, and I often hear their expressions of contempt and disgust when they're around us unrepentant omnivores, yet I frequently observe them consuming fake meat products. These products are not usually efficient sources of proteins, so don't bother with that argument.

Oh, and FYI, I was vegetarian for many years, but realized that I am an omnivore after all. I support organic and free range, and sustainability and ecological issues always.

No bacon, it is that important to you? Being a vegetarian is simple and you can get all the nutrients you need without eating meat. Your body is healthier too not having to try and digest meat. Don't knock it till you try it.

I am not a vegetarian, but you can get iron etc. out of other foods, like mushrooms and eggs and all that jazz.

And for the other question, How do they live without bacon?
Easy. Bacon's disgusting.

*laughing*. I have been living without bacon quite nicely for some time now. You don't need meat for protein. I manage with eggs, veggies, peanut butter, fish and fresh fruit just nicely.

I'm not a vegetarian, however the human body has a digestive tract that is most similar to that of herbivores as it is very long whereas carnivores have short digestive tracts.
