I was a live-in cook in southern cali for a little over 10 years and I have found that it is safest to pay a little extra and get someone from an agency. Chances are the agency will be able to do a better background check and this person will be bonded and fingerprinted than you will be able to so that you will have a better chance of knowing if you are hiring "matilda the hun" (LOL). Plus you can actually talk to their last employer. There are some surprises that you do not want from someone who has access to your family's home and the very food that you put in your stomach.
