have HPV and since you can have no sypmtoms of haveing strains 18 and 16 and you have it for years undetected .. (I heard you could get the cervial cancer or pre-cancerus cells and it clears up sometimes on its own in a couple years ..can that happen ?) would there be any side effects of going untreated other than getting full blown vagina cancer ?

Okay I know a lot of about this subject only because I have actually had cervical cancer from HPV. Cervical cancer kills 300,000 woman a year, so no it will not go away on its own, and can eventually kill you. You need to get it treated.

The best thing to do is go to your OBGYN. They will do a procedure called a Leep procedure, it's where they use a small heated wire and scrap off a thin layer of your cervix that has the abnormal cells on it. It is VERY painful, I started hyperventilating believe it or not when I went through it. They numb the area first but it is still painful.

Luckily mine hasn't come back, but I still have to go to the OBGYN and get a pap smear done every 4 months to make sure its not coming back.

Most kinds of HPV don't do anything, but if you know you have HPV make sure you are going and getting your yearly paps done.

Hope that helped!

I heard on the radio yesterday that a vaccination for HPV has come out and will be readily available by the end of this month. As far as cervical cancer goes I believe if you get it in the early stages and have it treated which there are different ways of going about it from preventing it from spreading like freezing the area for instance. I do not know what the symptoms are. I do know that that there are precancerous cells linked to HPV- displasia where a gyn has to have you come in every 6 months to watch for the cells to see if they form into cancerous cells. Ive been going every six months for past couple years, to watch to make sure the displasia hasnt turned into cancer its scary but at least Im going in to catch it if it does go that route. Dont mess around like this, please go and get checked also some cancers out there you may not even side effects its better to be safe than sorry. Also if you have HPV you need to know it is a STD and you need to be treated.

HPV might clear, but once you have cervical cell changes, you need treatment. That won't go away just because the HPV has, and that can lead to cervical cancer.

It WILL eventually lead to cervical cancer, which is fatal in some cases, but you can also have permament damage which can affect fertility, etc.

I have no idea why you wouldn't get treatment, except financial reasons. In that case, contact your local health dept and ask for assistance. Many places have really good free clinics, or you might qualify for other assistance programs.

Don't wait.
