I have un-stable angina and waiting angio in 2 weeks time. The past week to 10 days I can be doing nothing ie watching telly or in bed and I have a strange feeling in my chest, all of a sudden I am waiting for my heart to beat and then it thumps in my chest. I dont get the angina pain with this but I am aware of my heart beating for the next 5 minutes or so, it beats harder but not faster.
I am taking bisoprolol beta blockers 5mg, perindopril 2mg, nicorandil 30x2, avortastatin 80mg,asprin 75mg,plavix 75mg,isosorbide 60mg.

Any idea's what this could be?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you're having ectopic beats. Do you find that it's when you're sitting quietly you notice it? It feels like your heart skips a beat and then the next beat feels much stronger than normal - the thump in your chest you're describing. It's actually very common and about half the population get ectopic beats every now and then, just some people are more aware of them than others. I'd guess because you're concerned about your heart anyway you're a bit more sensitive to these palpitations than others may be. These ectopic beats aren't dangerous and don't require any treatment unless they become very irritating to the patient. I'd guess that your heart doesn't actually beat harder for the next five minutes - it's probably just that having noticed this ectopic beat, you become aware of your heart beating when you're not usually aware of it.

Obviously, if you are concerned about it, or if you get pain with it, you should see a doctor, but it sounds very like ectopic beats to me. It's something I have myself every now and again, and it happens when you are sitting quietly, or lying in bed - basically when your heart rate is slow. You're also on beta blockers which slows down the heart rate. If you do something to speed up the heart rate, ectopic beats disappear because of the physiology of the heart, but since you have unstable angina I'd advise against raising your heart rate!

This is not "normal" for you to feel this change in your heartbeat so I think you need an ECG pretty urgently to rule out anything serious that maybe going on. Call in to your local A&E and ask for an ECG to be done. They won't think you are a time waster and at the end of the day its better to be safe than sorry!

Go today and put your mind at rest. Hope everythings ok.

I would speak to the people who will be doing your angio, they may want to bring it forward.

You may have to go through your doctor, but I would certainly recommend it be sooner rather than later.

I don't have a diagnosis for you sorry, but what you are experiencing doesn't sound right does it?

Good luck.

I think what you're experiencing is called cardio infarction, or something like that. You need to get a hold of your doctor, it can be dangerous.
