cooking for yourself is alway gratifing, but it depends on how much time you have to prepare. If you have friends to help it is always good. If it is an outdoor party and people are mingling finger food is always fun but also alot of work and patience. Outdoor BBQ's ( to save money) you could ask guest to bring their choice of meat to grill. Using a caterer can be costly depending on what kind of food you want to serve. The cheapest way to use a caterer is usally from the deli dept of a grocery store. They quaility isn't the best. If you go with a local caterer and say you want it delivered you will have delivery charges. Which is an extra cost. If you don't have the time to do it yourself go to a local caterer and tell them what your budget is and what you want to serve and they should be able to come up with some kind of a menu for you. Do you have a theme for this party? Is this for adults or children etc. I'm a caterer myself, give me ideas and maybe I can help with food ideas.

The choice is yours completely. Catering is a rough way to go if your limited to how much your going to spend and 100 people are a lot of mouths to feed. If your a good cook and like to show off your cooking skills have at it. To curtail overall cost... try the cold cut methods with trays of meat & cheeses, salads, fruits, etc... but any which way you go it's going to cost some $$$$ to feed 100 people.

Have guests bring dishes to help you out.Doing it yourself will be cheaper than hiring someone.Go to Sam's and buy a bunch of potato salad, fruit trays, rolls BBQ sauce buy some Briskets and you can cook those a couple of days ahead of time take one or two briskets and chop up top with BBQ sauce serve on buns take the others and slice and serve.Have the men man the grill doing sausage hot dogs and hamburgers.Make relish and condiment trays the day before the party.

Cooking and clean up is always hard if you want to enjoy yourself. We have a place near us called Godon Foods, or go to Costco and buy bulk foods that only need to be heated or buy a couple of big subs, or meat trays and a veggie trays. or get some fried chick and sides.
Catering for 100 will be a little pricey.

Have some barbeque and hot wings catered to your party and fire up the grill with some chicken quarters which are cheap and easy to cook.

I agree with the bring your own dish thing. I come from a huge family, and birthdays and holidays were great gathering times, but a bi*ch to cook for, so we always made something that was our favorite... or a theme ( I had a big fat greek wedding movie and dinner one time, and everyone brought something greek and it was fun). its nice to have others pitch in, and its nicer to be able to have a huge variety of foods

MAKE IT A "BRING A DISH" PARTY. YOU DO THE MEATS AND ASK EVERYONE TO BRING A DISH OR MUNCHIE FOR THE FOOD TABLE. IT WILL CUT DOWN YOUR COST AND YOU'LL HAVE A VARIETY OF FOOD'S.

If you can afford to have a caterer go for it. You'll be able to enjoy your guest instead of exhausting yourself trying to please everyone.
