German sheperds are great dogs. They're smart, loyal and protective. I have had german sheperds before and I would definitely do it again. The only thing I would suggest you to keep in mind (from own experience) is that some sheperds tend to follow the commands of only one member of the family , that is, to have only "one owner" and ignore other members of the family.
Dobermans are great dogs as well, but tend to be a bit impatient and nervous around kids. German sheperds that are not used to kids can be very impatient and unpredictable also, so be sure to get a puppy, not an adult dog.
Your kids are old enough for these kind of dogs, so they'll be a great option. If they were smaller, maybe a retriever would be a better option.

A German Shepard would probably be best, Dobermans can be pretty aggressive, and with kids, you never know what kind of ideas they will come up with, and do to the dog. German Sheperds are very family oriented dogs, and they will guard you with their life, I've seen it happen.

I think you had better be really sure of what you want before you do it. Neither breed of dog is the best with kids. And as for a gaurd dog none should ever be around kids. Dogs trained for gaurding should never be around children ever. They should be handled only by the trainer.
If you are looking for a pet for the family who will be protective the Shepard would be a better choice.
Doberman often will not take correction from a child and they will test the child to see if they can intimidate them. If they do they kid is not going to be able to control the dog.
Shepards are more willing to do what is asked of them and less likely to push the issue with kids. They are more of a service oriented dog than the dobe.

The shepard is gonna shed more if that's of importance. For temperment the individual dog and it's raising is gonna be more important than the difference between the two breeds (though there are more sensitive Dobie's I think) With these breeds a good breeder is of major importance. If the parents hips are not checked or if the breeder doesn't ask you almost as many questions a somone trying to adopt a child--- run, don't walk the other way....
PS I highly recomend puppy kindergarden and at least basic Obedience class and get the kids involved too.....

In my opinion, german sheperd is the way to go because they have a more patient temperment than a dobie. But it's your choice of what kind of dog you would like. The best thing to do is get them while they are a puppy so they can learn to be around with children.

The German Sheperd would be the best if you get one as a puppy. Because is you get an adult they might think the children are messing with the relationship between you and them. Also, German Sheperds are easy to train.

Im going to go with the German Shepherd. I have owned and raised GSD's for 18 years now. I have a male "Hoss" who walks my child to the bus, and waits for him to get on, then hears the bus in the afternoon and is waiting for him at the bus stop to get off. When my son gets to the gate Hoss goes back to his back yard area. German Shepherds are very loyal, and eager to please their humans. Very easily trained. You need to do some research on the breeder you are considering, you don't need a "working dog" I think what you will be looking for is show/pet quality German Shepherd. Good luck to you.

i think u should go for a German Shepherd. The German Shepherd Dog is a breed of dog. Because they are eager to please, they are easily trained in obedience and protection. German Shepherd Dogs are often used as working dogs in many capacities, including search and rescue (SAR) dogs, military dogs, police dogs, or guard dogs. They are also used as assistance dogs (particularly guide dogs), though not as much as Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers.

If you've got kids, I'd go with a Shepherd or even better - a Labrador Retriever.. Labs are great watchdogs, but they'll be safe with your kids and your kids friends. A shepherd may be too protective of your own children and could bite another child if the kids go into a fight.
