Because some guy hundreds of years ago convinced a lot of other people that it looked good. We are still convinced.

Yes. Blue suit, white shirt - a tie is about the only thing "flashy" a conservative man can wear. You wouldn't wear a red velvet smoking jacket to work, or a bottle-green frock coat. You can, however, wear a tie with flowers or ducks or wine glasses or T. rex skeletons on it. If you are a banker or a lawyer you should steer clear of hand-painted ties with topless hula girls on them, but if you are a used-car salesman or a rock musician they look just fine.
Most men whose ties are uncomfortable have gained enough weight that the 16" neck shirts they wore 3 years ago should be traded in on 17" neck ones, but they don't want to admit it. If your shirt fits properly with the top button buttoned, a tie isn't uncomfortable.

It's tradition. However, in a lot of offices the tie is becoming optional and there are "dress down" days which allow workers to dress more comfortably. Why not see if your office will consider doing that? Good luck.

Good point. I have no idea why the tie was/is so important in formal dressing, esp for those living near the Equator. It does look nice, though, with a bit of extra color.

I was trying on suits on a hot summer day, so I know how you feel. Unfortunately wearing it is sometimes required at my work -- it makes me look more professional. If it was up to me, we could all wear T-shirts to work all the time.

There is a joke about this:
Two friend meet at the park:
1: I think my wife is trying to kill me...
2: Why do you think so?
1: Every morning she ties my tie tighter and tighter.

For the same reason women wear high heels. To look the best they can in the public eye toward other people. Whether it be for professional reasons, or just for dating purposes.

If the suit is killing you, then you're wearing the wrong suit. People who wear linen and silk/wool combine fabrics don't have that problem. (It also helps not to be fat aroud the waist.)

It's probably no more illogical, impractical or uncomfortable than women wearing high heels.

curiosity curtails decency and civil behaviour, it is just a norm, like wearing clothes, and wearing shoes or eating food in a plate is.
