Best converter for that type, Would be a CD..
Yup.. Burn the protected music to a music CD, Then use a CD Ripper like CDex to extract the files as .mp3's

Try Audacity (free). You will also have to download the LAME mp3 encoder. I have used it and it works well. Don't know about the protected part.
