Gen 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Psa 110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
(Heb 7:19) For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.
(Heb 7:20) And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:
(Heb 7:21) (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord swore and will not repent, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek:)
(Heb 7:22) By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

Melchizidek was the king of Salem and the priest of God Most high, as mentioned in Genesis. He blessed Abraham (proving thus that he was greater than Abraham, since the lesser is blessed by the greater.)
Melchizidek was a foreshadowing, or 'type' of Christ, since he is not shown to have any earthly parents, and his death is not recorded; like Christ then he had no earthly father and remains a priest forever.
There is a reference in the Psalms to a priest who would someday be of the same order as Melchizidek (not one of the priests of the line of Aaron.) This was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Refer to the book of Hebrews for more details.

Melchizedek was a prophet and Priesthood leader around 2000 B.C. One of his titles was "king of Salem" or Jerusalem and he was considered a priest of the most High God. See Genesis 14:18-20, Hebrews 5:6, and Hebrews 7:1-3. The priesthood of Melchizedek is also mentioned in Psalms and in Hebrews in a few other places. Abraham paid his tithing to Melchizedek. The "order of Melchizedek" or "Melchisedec" depending on spelling variations, was really the same order of the Priesthood passed down by the laying on of hands as a physical ordination among the highest religious leaders. Prophets and apostles would have this Priesthood, but descendants of Aaron would most likely only have the Aaronic Priesthood. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we also have both orders of Priesthood. Deacons, teachers, and priests are ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood (for lesser ordinances), and elders, high priests, bishops, and others with callings involving a greater number of people receive the Melchizedek Priesthood. The Priesthood is the authority to act in God's name, and it is given to worthy men in a line of authority. Priesthood blessings are meant to bless every member, both men and women, as well as children. The Priesthood of Jesus Christ is the same as the Melchizedek Priesthood, but in order to avoid mentioning the name of deity too often in passing references, the name of Melchizedek is used as a synonymous term in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It does NOT mean we worship Melchizedek. We worship God the Father in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ.
