The short answer: Girls are being dumbed down by tv, media, friends, and the public school system. No wonder they are wearing loin cloths to school and becoming pregnant at 14. No morals, bad parenting, and lack of direction. SCARY.

Well let's see I was a teen, my daughters were teens, and it won't be long before the grandkids will be teens. I think I might just have a handle on this.
Grandma wasn't happy with mom's clothing.
My mother wasn't impressed with my Go-Go boots, mini skirts and hot pants.
I wasn't impressed my girl's combat boots and skirt combo.
First I agree that we should generalize all teens, some are very proper, well mannered and ladylike. HOWEVER more times than not, teen girls drive their mothers nuts! It's just part of the circle of life.
As teens they are in the stage of life, trying to figure out who they are. They don't want to be like mom, they do want to look like their friends and idles. The good news, is this stage is relatively short.
As to the 'so fake', I don't think it's so much fake, as testing the waters. They see different things and try them out. Most will find themselves, and will be asking the same question in 20 years. The few that don't... well we all know a few adults who don't know how to dress, are fake...

Think back....when you were a teenager why did you do the same thing. Well i have a sister and i know what you are talking about.
The answer is to get attention and recognition (to be accepted). They just go with how the mass society in school wants them to be. So they act and try to dress and behave accordingly to the mass taste.
But it is always ends in failure. Being yourself is better and the best way to get through teenage life.
When one day you have a daugther try to advice her on this, why worry this is happening all over the world in any society.
Hope that answer you question
bye

Think about it, when you were a teen, who did you take your cues from? The chicks on TV or in magazines or your Aunt Betty? Seriously, girls today don't have any trendy women who have their heads screwed on straight to model themselves after. Very seldom do we see a woman in pop culture with her life together, her skirt to her knees, and her legs closed. We are bombarded with the sexual image of the woman. Sure, this has its place too, but it seems to have taken over. And sorry, but it just ain't cool to wear a twin set and a pencil skirt to school when you are trying to compete with the girl in the halter and mini.
Girls today don't have anybody to model themselves after. What they need is someone they can relate to or at least aspire to be like. There simply just aren't any women that represent that right now. On one extreme is the Pamela Anderson who uses sex appeal and on the other extreme is the Condoleeza Rice who is powerful and smart but has no style (or at least not any style worth mimicking). There is no happy medium. There is no twenty-something that is both trendy while covered up and smart while friendly. There are no good young role models or they are few and far between.

Well, it's not really fair to stereotype the "average" teenager. Personally, I consider myself a pretty good kid. I get good grades, I'm active in my community, I'm in clubs, and I do a lot of stuff. Anyways it's probably because what is portrayed by the media. TV, the internet, and radio are a very powerful influence in todya's world. It is a double edged sword that some choose to follow. Like the show the O.C. Let me tell you that things from my part of the O.C. aren't even like that at all on tv. Kids just want to be what they see because they think it's "cool" or "in." Or sometimes it's just those (no offense) posers who try ot fit in too much or try to hard to fit the stereotype because they are afraid of being rejected by society and their peers.

the biggest part of being a teenager is trying to find your own identity and individuality. The way the teenagers dress is just evidence of the searching process. When I was a teenager, we wore a red bandanna around one leg, and don't forget about the girls dressing like Madonna, or in ripped clothing like in Flash Dance. It is just a stage of growing up.

nothing (including the way boys and girls are dressed) is fake, nothing is inappropriate. girls act and dress in certain ways because boys wanted (visibly/invisibly) them to do so. boys' acts and dresses are also shapped by the taste of the girl folk. these tastes are certainly influenced by the general social fabric of which the most important agents are the school and the media. who acts behind these agents, devil knows. for me, I just love the way the girls are! Long live frisky chicks!!!!

I believe that teenagers dressess inappropriately because they:
1.) Want to fit in. If you know what I mean.
2.) They are rebelling.
3.) They want to be noticed or they are craving for attention.
Ok I also believe that they act fake because:
1.) They want to be different than others.
2.) They are afraid to show their true self.

every teenage girl goes through that period where we act fake and dress inappropriately and for me, that's normal. i think, based on observations, girls act like this because they need attention especially to a boy she likes, and after several times of doing so, we came to realize that it's stupid. we've became blind of our desires. it's a sign of our puberty, and i think we don't have to worry about those things because every other girl like us experiences the same.
