I honestly think it is a financial issue. I think the problem with organized religion is the organization itself and the fact that it requires money to maintain. Once you have a mortgage and mouths to feed, you have to focus on fundraising - and that means building and keeping a congregation.
I think many feel that to do that, you need to prove to the faithful that your version of the Universal Truth is the correct one and the others are false. The worse you can make the punishment also seems to help to keep people in line and making their weekly donations. I think it is a shame, but a harsh reality of our capitalistic society.
Couple that with the histories of bloody intolerance on all sides (the Roman pagans fed the Christians to the lions, the Christians invaded and murdered the Celtic Pagans, etc.). No one side is at fault - with the aggressive nature of humans, this is a natural consequence of growth and the development of our warrior nature.
There is a way to rise above it, though. I think that if we look at the religions of the world, we can see commonalities, similarities - a basis in love, truth and good will. If we could focus our attention more on the similarities and let the donation chips fall where they may, we could come out of this as 1 planet ,1 people, infinite diversity for maximum prosperity for all.

Of course I hope you mean just some followers of religions, not the religions themselves.
It bugs me that they do this, because a faith is something that should bring people together, not apart.
Yet I think the bums who do this somehow believe it's better to put people down, and actually think that by disrespecting other faiths they are doing God's will, or inspiring others to be more like them.
Either way, I think it is wrong to disrespect others beliefs, especially when it is what a lot of people live by, and have followed with happiness their whole lives. It's great to "spread the word" and teach others about your religion, (I'm Christian and that's what Jesus wanted us to do) but we must not put down others while doing so.

You cannot leave politics out. Its not the common people who don't respect different beliefs. Its the political motives of the religious leaders that create differences. These leaders incite the people on petty differences.

Because one or more of those religions advocate the destruction or assimilation of the others... The most ancient story of all time - power!
Think Borg from star trek :
We are the Borg. Lower your shields and power down your weapons. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated."
Now remove bored and insert whatever religion you want and there is your answer.

Not sure why. Seems most of them have a very war-like attitude towards other religions.
Sorry, but religion and politics usually go hand in hand.

Because most churches are an abomination. Check out the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Joseph Smith asked the same question.

That is a question a lot of us will be asking for a long time. I believe everyone should chose the path that is right for them. We are in essence all striving for the same end result.

Because it's mans natural tendency to think he is the right one. (ALWAYS) and when you get a bunch of men who think that they all know which one(CHURCH) is the right one, boy look out. When have you ever seen a man stop and ask for directions? Exactly my point!
