"Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water..."
Jack fell because the hill was so steep, Jill fell down for the same reason, what I wonder is why they went looking for water at the top of the hill--wouldn't there have been more water at the bottom of it?!

Jill was a co-dependent female who could not do anything on her own. After Jack fell, she was lost and hopeless so she simply did the same thing he did.
A more politically correct version would be "Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill went to night school and got her PHD while raising 3 children as a single mom and now is the CEO of a Fortune 500 company."
