The one thing is you probably needed a permit to do the renovation. If you did not and you have a nasty neighbor who has turned you in...you can get someone to draw the plans for it and submit it to the city in which you live, get a permit and probably keep it
but it is a little costly to do the permitting after than before construction because the city is usually annoyed that you didn't get one in the first place

building codes and zoning regulations differ widely from community to community. No-one can truly answer this without reference to your local and county laws and ordinances. Check with the officials in your city and/or county.
