The one thing is you probably needed a permit to do the renovation. If you did not and you have a nasty neighbor who has turned you in...you can get someone to draw the plans for it and submit it to the city in which you live, get a permit and probably keep it
but it is a little costly to do the permitting after than before construction because the city is usually annoyed that you didn't get one in the first place
