Jihad means Holy Mission. Actually Jihad refers to you conquering yourself. Jihad is the Holy War you take on to make yourself a better person. Jihad is not to go out and kill others. Jihad is for you. To make yourself perfect and to overcome who and what you are with God's help. It is a lifetime quest. Perfection is not an easy accomplishment. Love of God and Love of Neighbor sums it all up. Jihad is how you do it. Get busy and overcome and be a true conquerer. Be well.

Some muslims should be blamed for translating Jihad to "Holy War" in English, when you analyze the actual meaning of Jihad translated considering the root of its formation in Arabic the closest to it in English will be = "Struggle"

So why the hype about Jihad ? Allah asks humans to be nice and do good deeds so doing good deeds is of course a struggle so its a reference to the struggle we have to got through in order to achieve certain things like praying five times a day in different times, fasting for about 30 days and stuff like that.

In an Islamic sense "War in the Path of Allah" becomes obligatory towards a man during certain occasions for example (for self defense, for defense of ones Faith, for the defense of other Muslims, to protect ones property)

If a mass war is to be executed it is the rule that religious leaders should analyze the situation and declare "Jihad - War in the path of Allah" if such a situation arise it becomes compulsory for men to fight.

i am a muslim

Jihad is a comprehensive process, which takes in the striving of an individual or a group of Muslims, to adhere to the divine teachings and values.

In this sense, jihad means a serious, continuous, and sincere struggle, on both the personal, as well as on the social level. It is a struggle to perform and maintain goodness, abolishing injustice, oppression, and evil from within oneself, as well as from the whole society. Thus, jihad takes many forms; spiritual, social, economic, as well as political.

Such striving (jihad) should go along with all our actions. This is to assure the noble and positive outcome of any of these actions. Jihad, when meaning to fight, is only one form of this striving, in its comprehensive meaning. This, in fact, is a point that many non-Muslims do not know.

To terminate the non Islamic believers and not to trust them was a command from the Greatest Commander of war during the war time.
Now Jihad is to Wa jaa hidoo bil Qur'aan, to combat with the Qur'aan, not to take Qur'aan in one hand and, sword in other, but to combat with what is in the Qur'aan, like

Jihad means "armed struggle." Its Islam's idea to convert us infidels (unbelievers in Islam) or kill us. I say destroy Islam and watch how much peace comes about in the world.

Literal translation means "struggle"

Originally, it was supposed to mean a spiritual struggle to come to terms with loving Allah, but has come to mean a physical altercation against Western influences in the teachings of the modern Wahab imams.

associate20521 is right on.

And regarding the Holy War, I believe in Islam you can defend yourself, however it is a great sin to be the aggressor.
