there are a few, but german shepards and labs are my favorite. They are both great but the difference is a german shepard looks better as a guard dog if that is what you are looking for. Every dog has different needs though, so make sure you pick the breed that best fits your needs and lifestyle also.

One of the smartest is the Golden Retriever (according to the book "THE DOG Why Are Dogs Noses Wet?"), but in the book "The Intelligence of Dogs," it said that the smartest is the collie. One more thing, you can't just determine by experience because it could just happen to you and no one else.

A chuachua they are realy smart dogs. Allso very protected of there masters. I have had a lot of dogs through my life time. And this chuachua we have now is the smartest dog i have ever been around. She knows every thing you say to her. She can sing she pottie train her on self. She doesnt want eny body to come over. Unless she gets to bark so hard at first. she knows good people from bad people. If she dont like a person theres something wrong.. She can sence the good from the bad. And if she dont like that person she will never like them. That means she barks till they leave.

Think about it! you may not want the smartest dog you can find. The intelligence of dogs book point this out. Smart dogs get bord easily and then they can think of 101 types of mischeif to get into. I know of dogs who can open door knobs, the refrigerator, the oven & screw top cans. Turn on & off lights faucets , overdump the trash cans, drop toys in the toilet -- need I go on? Get a smart dog & you may find you have to spend the next 10-15 years barely staying ahead of them. Dumb is comfortable.
IF you really want the challange - poodles and goldens are bright breeds as are most of the guard & hearding breeds and shelties are both bright & usually not terribly inclined to mischief (except barking)

Komondors, Labrador Retriever and German Shepherds are the most loyal and smart dogs. They also are the most protective and loving. A German Shepherd isn't always the best kind of dog to have around very small children, but they are wonderful loyal dogs to older children.
I go for the Komondor because they look terrifying to a potential burglar. I mean, if you were a white dog wearing dreadlocks, wouldn't you scare the crap out of a burglar?

The best dog to get is one that fits your needs. The first thng you need to ask yourself is what do you want to get from your dog? Do you want a companion dog, then I suggest a toy breed like a Chihuahua, french poodle, pomeranian, etc.
If you want a sporting dog, depends what sport you practice, duck hunting for example would be the Labrador retreiver your best choice, they have a very gentle bite, also very recomended for children since they have lots of energy and love children. Not to mention they love, love, love water.
If you want a guard dog, then i suggest you go with a rottti, german shepard dog, doberman, american pit bull-however, you must be able to control these breeds because they can be potentially dangerous if not trated well, but they are very intelligent and territorial so this makes them good guard dogs. They can also be very strong so it´s imperative that you agree to spend on obidience classes, these breeds are easy to train As far a bitting, you have a better chance of being sued due to your chihuahua biting someone than your rotti-.if you have him properly trained.
If you have lots of space, Great danes are a lot of fun, they are very loveable, gentle and all together wonderful dogs, however they do require space to run and play, and you will have to feed them so you may want to check how much you are willing to spend on feed. They are delicate while groing up and may suffer some breed problems that can be controlled and managed with the help of you vet. Usually these problems develop due to lack of knowledge on the breed.
If you want a good companion that rides well in the car and will do anything to be with you all the time but sheds a lot of hair, then I suggest the dalmatian, they are very protective of their owner but very selective, they will react to a threat but usually not instigate it. You will have to make sure you get a certificate that states they are not deaf or blind, since these are genetic problems in the breed. With German shepard dogs make sure it´s certifies hip dissplasia free.

German Sheppards are very tough and smart. They are great guards and easy to train. After dealing with so many breeds through out my life, that is the smartest and greatest breed.

Toys are smartest. My mom's friend had a pomeranian that was highly intelligent and I had a Shih Tzu that was a genius!

Golden Retrievers are smart and are very good family dogs. They are loyal, gentle and easy to train. Another smart dog that is easy to train is the Australian Shepherd.
