This could be the clogging up of your Eustachian tubes and other sinus problems.

There are many 'cavities' in and around your nose, throat and mouth that can be affected by colds, flu etc.

As a scuba diver you have to be very aware of this part of your body due to the pressures that exist at depth

It could be congestion/clogged up from ear wax. Try a q-tip. But with me, my ears pop when the pressure in the air/altitude changes. It's because of a muscular tube in your ear (I forget what it's called) that opens and closes frequently to balance out the changes in pressure. When your ear feels stuffy it's because the pressure cannot be stabilized. When the muscle opens back up, that's when the POP happens.

There is a tube (Eustachian tube)that runs from the middle ear into the upper throat. The middle ear space is a closed space with no entrance to it other than that tube. When you open the tube in the upper throat by yawning any difference in pressure causes a little rush of air rush and you hear the tube open. When climbing in an airplane the pressure declines in the cabin but not in the mid ear unless you yawn or swallow. If you have cold the tube can be swollen shut. Climbing or descending in a plane can cause severe pain when you cannot get the damn thing to open no matter how you contort your throat to open the tube to equalize the pressure.

im glad you ask this question cause i feel and hear the same way but i thought its due to my pressure. reading from other answers, i now get an idea why. i do suffer from sinusitis as well but i know its not clogged cause i clean my ears with q-tip everyday. since no one hear that popping sounds except myself, and i feel like im losing it, i am so thankful that there are more experienced and knowledgeable others out there.

thanks for all the answerer's that you have, i learn something from it...

It's the pressure building up inside your ears from your sinuses.

it might actually be your jaw popping, or the pressure in your inner ear is messed up for some reason.

clogged up - I suffer it too.

Sinuses and earwax - see a doctor who can effectively clear it up!
