It seems like today so many young intelligent people have come to the conclusion that God is a rather silly notion. What led to this? The hypocrisy of the religious right? The internet as a medium to get their voices heard without being drowned out by the bleating of sheep?

let'sgo - "Jump the shark" is a phrase that originated on "Happy Days" when Fonzie water-skiied and jumped over a shark. It's been argued that it was all downhill from there for the show... The phrase describes something that is past its prime or falling out of favor.

Ellis - You're right on 2 counts - 1 - a reference to Happy Days probably doesn't resonate with kids today....and 2...the evidence of a Flying Spaghetti Monster is truly compelling. I'm converted!

The Internet has probably been the most influential factor.
The only real outlet to promote atheism is the Internet. Since atheists don't have a doctrine to promote, the only way to "spread the word" is on an informal, one on one basis. The I'net makes that much easier.
I notice bible thumpers aren't using the line they used to use quite often about atheists all being in prison for child molesting or some other such nonsense.
Another commonly told lie was that all atheists killed themselves or were struck down by God.
Don't see those too much anymore.
Glad to be able to discuss the issue with like minded people and I'm a 58 year old geezer living in the "Bible Belt" (Dallas-Fort Worth, TX area).
And, for the bible thumpers, no, I'm not surfing the net looking for a butt buddy or a 12 year old boy/girl. I'm just an old geezer sitting in my cardboard box under a bridge minding my own business.

"Jump the shark"? Where are you from dude. I have a feeling with sayings like that, you may be a little more disconnected with "young intelligent people" than you think. Your question is more of a supposed assumption. Most young intelligent people I know don't think God is a silly notion. In fact we know him to be a very powerful Flying Spaghetti Monster. Over ten million of us believe, we are just afraid of being ridiculed so we rarely mention religion. I hope you will take just a second of your time to visit our sight at www.venganza.org, and get better connected with the youth, and the God of today.

Youth of today see God as a story or silly notion because parents, and parents parents, etc... let Godly wisdom and church slip away. its not the young peoples fault they get more attention from the devil and media than they get from Christians.
most churches spend about 15% of there time and money on the Youth of there church. the rest to the older people. there are some such as Battlecry in America, and Youth Alive in Australia, that are starting to wake up to this and focus on kids... but the majority have there heads in the sand and wonder why kids are so off the rails.
How will they know unless someone tells em lovingly?
kids want attention, and dont wanna be critisised.
the media does this pretty well. so do musicians.
we should learn how to communicate with the Youth, without compromising God's way of course.

People's anger and disbelief in the way the Church runs things...especially with all the controversy.
Maybe people have gotten "smarter" and have deduced to themselves that in this logical world, God cannot logically exist.
The lack of relationship with God through ineducation and misguidance could make someone believe that he doesn't exist. Just like a child living without knowing about his long lost father. He wouldn't even know he exists unless he is told about him.

What the heck does "jump the shark" mean? I think thinking God is a silly notion is the logical conclusion, can't you see?

Maybe they actually pondered the idea rather than just mindlessly accepting what other faith zombies told them...
"God" IS a rather silly notion. Why would you find it surprising that a few people figure that out?

A number of influences. Science for one has created a sense that if something can't be seen, measured or studied, it doesn't exist. Also, people often think that God is not relevant and religion is past its "Use by" date.

They just want a way to justify their lustful acts by saying that God is not their thus no one will punish them at the end...don't worry if they don't repent they'll be lots of room in hell for them...

If He'd ever did among individuals, it would be after they've learned a lot (particularly philosophy) or He'd answered few of their prayers.
