Check your local laws. It just depends on where you are . You can do a search online for animal limit laws, your city state. Call the courthouse and ask who you can call to find out the exact laws for your area.
You can try animal control, but as I have found out they do not always know either.
I live in Alabama. The city code where I am has a 4 animal per house limit, but because I am in the county there are no animal limits at all.
Good Luck! .

We're in central Il.and yes there are some cities that require a kennel license if you own more than 4.There are also places I've heard that you're only allowed 2 dogs per acre. But that's only within city limits.
Since you have an acre,I'm assuming you're under county jurisdiction so check with them.

Depends on the city you live in. If you live in an unincorperated area, then the county laws are for you. Call you local pound. Make sure your area falls into the area covered by the pound since they won't be sure on the requirements for an area they aren't associated with. They will be able to answer that question for you. I lived in a small town once that the max was 3 dogs. Part of the town was unincorperated (not part of the city limits) and that part was 5 dogs

This usually falls under local law, not state law.
Most cities have a much lower number than rural areas.
Call your local county courthouse to make sure you get the correct answer.
