Fuzzy logic is a way of dealing mathematically with values of true and false that are "mostly true," "somewhat false," etc. - more like our understanding of the world.
This is accomplished by using the rational numbers between 0 (for completely false) and 1 (for completely true). So, if it was mostly true that Jane had red hair, you would say the truth value is 0.9

The book listed below is an excellent non-technical read for a layperson on this topic.In the West we're good at long complex chains of deduction where every statement is completely correct; or wrong; it has a truth value of 1 or 0. East Asian cultures excel at handling statements that are partly true. For instance if today is cloudy, the statement that it is fine is about 50% true. Fuzzy logic is used in electronic equipment that makes judgements based on shades of truth, like cameras that mostly focus on the centre of the field of view but pay some attention to the rest of the picture. Interestingly, western science leads in non-fuzzy logic applications but the Japanese, Koreans and Chinese lead the world in designing fuzzy logic devices.

Fuzzy logic, is the ability to make intelligent 'guesses' from the knowledge present, eg, you want John Smith, but the search actually turns up the real persons name as Jon Smythe.
Or when used in an 'intelligent' waser, the fuzzy logic detects when the wash water is almost clean, so decides to end the wash cycle.
Or when lookign for street names, will guess the nearest names to match.

Fuzzy logic is derived from fuzzy set theory dealing with reasoning that is approximate rather than precisely deduced from classical predicate logic. It can be thought as the application side of fuzzy set theory dealing with well thought out real world expert values for a complex problem.

Everyone else is more or less right, but it is also considered a hack way to do control of physical systems. I don't necessarily agree with that, but the respected control community in research likes to shun it - probably to keep the unrespected community unrespected.
