It also supplements their new offerings, such as Yahoo Answers, Avatars, and their revamped Messenger: online status is visible from a website that has much more detail than Yahoo Profiles, your avatar image is visible optionally from your messenger/chat sessions, etc. Like myspace and most community sites, your friends and associates are also visible at your option to allow people to network as well.
It's still a work in progress, of course.
