why im asking. my dog was with a female. he was mating with her but not actually staying in position with her for a long period of time. they didn't connect and stay that way. do they actually have to connect and stay in that position for a certain amount of time? or can they be together for short periods and no full connection?

They do have to coital tie and stay that way for 5-60 minutes.

The website below indicates you should not disturb them unless they have been in a coital tie for more than an hour.

If your dog was not attached for at least 5 minutes...then it is possible you will need to re-breed.

Oh yes. Most life-forms on the planet accomplish reproduction without the benefit of a penis to internally fertilize the female. Heck, about all the lifeforms in the sea do it by just scattering both parts somewhere near each other and wandering off to do other things. Sperm is more than capable of finding its way in and to the right spot so long as you get it near the mark.

Yes. They stay connected only for psychological bonding.

If male dogs are anything like male humans, they may be prone to pre-mature ejaculation. It's possible that your dog was able to finish in this short time, and he could now be some baby's daddy.

All it takes is one little sperm swimming up stream.
