I went to the dentist four days ago because I had swollen gums near one of my teeth (next to a capped one) with a bit of pain. The dentist tells me that the x-rays don't show anything. Four days later and the pain unbearable..I have a swollen jaw and tons of canker sores in that area (even by the tooth). My jaw has a knot in it and the pain is just AWFUL! Could there be a problem with my capped tooth?? If so, what can be done about it??

I have gone back to the dentist that I had originally saw and she referred me to a specialist..being that the x-rays don't show anything. She did mention there is a gap near my capped tooth and has given me meds for it. However, I have no idea what could be wrong and was wondering if the tooth under my cap could be dead and if so what could or might be done next?

I have had the cap for about 4-5 years and have never experienced any other problems.

Canker sores are usually a reaction to something...
change in tooth paste, spice foods, irritations from something, as far as the knot if an infection starts like that and hasn't been there for months it's not going to show up on an x-ray(the infection hasn't been there long enough to effect the bone) you should get a second opinion. how long have you had the cap and what type of discomfort have you experienced with that tooth in the past?

Sounds to me like you either need to call the same dentist back up if you've been going to him/her regularly or go find another dentist! You obviously have something going on with that capped tooth or the teeth nearby and the gums swelling pain, etc is showing it!!! I do know that lots of canker sores can hurt too but I don't think it is just that. I think you need to get yourself to a dentist right away! Good luck, hope you feel better!:)

there are times when a tooth will act mysteriously and require a specialist to look closer... the nerve could be dying on that crowned tooth but your canker sores are interesting as well -IF the tooth has gone bad on ya and the nerve is dead or dying- usually an endodontist can open that tooth up and do a root canal which should solve the problem- its done like that all the time and not a big deal for you other than paying for it.

If you in a lot of pain i would seek out another opinon. Sometimes pain starts before an obvious conclusion can be made. There maybe something going on that was undetectable a few days ago.

Re-visit your dentist and explain the situation, or get a second opinion.

if possible you may consider looking to get a second opinion.
