Cats are very social. They communicate in varoius ways
Vocalization, body signals, touch and scent.
Even if your cat is the only one in your house hold it will communicate with other cats in the neighborhood, it´s like a club, it has an organization that forms a type of association with rituals and rules that are very particular to the group and everyone (cats) in the club (association) know each other and their allottted position in the hierarchy. Strangers have to fight to earn their acceptance into the group.
You and your family are a part of this club, when your pet comes over to be petted, it would be similar to you calling a friend up on the phone while you sit and drink a cup of coffee, it is telling you things.
Cats that are left alone inside or get little attention sometimes develop anti-social traits, chewing carpet, urinating on funiture or outside their litter box (can also be a sighn of illness so pay attention to this one), bitting or pulling out it´s fur. In this instance, you may want to visit your vet to rule out illness or introduce a play mate, try to dedicate at least 15 to 20 min a day to your cat and this too might elimate potential problems.

All animals seek attention, companionship and comfort. A cat is no different from a person, in this respect. When you pet a cat, it feels good to the cat. That's why a cat likes to be petted, because it feels good.

Because cats just loooove attention. They usually do.Some like to be pet on their stomachs. The ones who want attention come up to you and rub up against you for attention, or something like asking you for food. But all of that doesn't really matter and I was getting a little off task, but the main answer that you have been looking for is that cats were born for attention, most do , and they come up to you and being pet is their way of attention.

They just do. Haven't given it much thought. Most domestic animals like to be petted. It is soothing to them and it helps them bond with people. Cats are very smart and maybe they are looking for one of those fancy cat treats or something.

Cats like to be pet because they have nerves, just like humans do. They physically and emotionally desire contact, same way we do. For example, humans love back rubs and foot massages for the same exact reasons they like to be pet.

Petting is a form of grooming. Just as lions in a pride will groom each other with their tongues, as a hierarchical sign of friendship, respect, acceptance etc., your cat likes the feeling of being petted because it feels like your cleaning them with your hand tongue!

Cats are very tactile animals, they spend a lot of time grooming each other, and it probably feels good.. so when humans pet a cat, it probably feels quite similar.

All pets like to be petted. Its a way they feel secure and closer to their owner and when owners pet their pets the pets understand that they belong to the owner.
