Dogs (or cats) I have or have had in life... Dawson (schnauzer), Dixie (schnauzer), Misty (schnauzer), Sassy (dalmation), Jade (cat), Cappy (blue tick hound), Spotty (can't remember the breed), Mr Pud E Dawg (dalmation), Miss Babe E Dawg - Missy for short (dalmation), Baby Blue - baby for short (dalmation with blue eyes), Scooter (cocker spaniel we rescued), Frisbee (cocker spaniel we rescued), Biscuit (chow with a HUGE HEAD), touson pronounced TOE SAWN (chow), Mikey (chow something mixed we rescued), Ms Kitty (spaniel of some sort and something else mixed my mom found on side of road and she named her), Bowzer (a chihuahua the neighbors were giving away), Shoopow (a siamese cat), Pooter (a cat that the neighbors were going to have put down because it was throwing up - it was the food they were feeding her), Maggy (she wasn't our dog, but lived in our yard - she was a stinky basset hound).
Oh and I had a blind fish once that if you tapped on the side of the tank he'd let you pet him - the pet store let us have him and he was already named ROSCOE.

My two dogs are Kohler and Betsy. Kohler has an interesting history, actually. We were out on the lawn with him, and we were trying MANY different names. Just calling them out and seeing what he responded to. He responded to some of them, but not with much vigor.
The next day, the plumber came and everytime he'd work on the toilets Kohler would COMPLETELY bombard the plumber and not let him get any work done. When the plumber left all Kohler did was drink out of the toilet bowl. So we named him Kohler, after the plumbing company of the toilet.
What I'm trying to get to? Go for whatever he/she's interested in. Or make something creative. Or start trying names, see how he/she feels. When you find the right name, you'll know, and you'll find it soon.

One sister has a boxer named Nellie.
The other sister has a Rusian wolf hound named chystal. And another named Alex.
A friend of mine has spanials named Fred, Isa, and lowmain.(Don't ask me why)
We used to have a setter named Ginger.
My parents had a corgie named Noodle. As a child I had a little brown mut named Rusty. And an Afgan hound named Cisco Kid.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

Our dog's name is Argus and we nick named him Gus for short. Argus was a hundred eyed giant in Roman Mythology. When he was killed his eyes were placed in the tail of the peacocks. I loved the story, I like peafowl, and it just seemed to fit our SP. I also liked the name Jake..... there used to be a country song called "feed Jake". It was a sad but cute song. I had a boxer once and we called him Rocky. Our cocker spaniel's name was Sport...... Our toy poodle was named after Puff the Magic Dragon....... My eldest daughter had a Samoyed named Sammy. She now has a mix that she calls Navajo. My middle daughter used to have a cocker pup called Velvet..... My other daughter had a Malmute called Zeus.

Think of places that have been important to you. I named my dog after a town. It kind of depends if it's a pet or a companion as to what type of name it should have.
Another idea is to use a name in another language...like "Milagro" (spanish for miracle).

If a Golden Retriever...King Midas' Golden Touch the IX (mine was the VIIIth). I called him Midas.
If a doberman, Atillah. It just sounds cool.
If a poodle, how about Puddles? LOL
