let me first ask if your hair is normally black, I mean pure black because I don't know your nationality. Some people who weren't born with pure black hair well when they use the dye then the dye color looks harsh on their skin. Dye is permanent and you want it to match the color you had. Remember that the hair grows, and so you'd need touchups (i.e. for a guy that would merely mean you'd re-color it) so the color will build. You can always go from (buying and using) a lighter to a darker shade, but can only reverse a too dark shade by cutting off the beard and starting all over. I was a cosmetologist years ago, and I have used Clairol products for many years, they are an old company, and their products are old and very good (and are like staples in a kitchen, used by a lot of cosmetologists). I haven't had as much luck with L'Oreal although they are an old standby as well, but some people have. Roux is one of the oldest companies in color. Clairol has a product out (in the grocery stores or at drugstores) in a box (like a kit that comes with the color plus the 20 volume bleach, and yes to dye hair permanently it takes bleach). Choose your color (if you choose dark brown there are two hues: cool brown...has a dullish green hue to it, and warm brown...has a reddish hue). Black is just black. There are two kit products in Clairol that I would recommend, one is a kit just for men, and the other is a kit to color grey. Both should work well for you. The hair on your head may be a different color or shade than your beard. Make sure the beard matches the hair on your head. In fact, why not color all your hair at the same time so it will match and so you will also color your sideburns. Read all the directions before you start. There is a patch test you should take 24 hours before you use the product with regard to the dye to be sure you are not alergic to the product. You can made that test on the inside of your elbow (where your arm bends). Get out your gloves and a timer and the shampoo and an old towel before you begin and newspaper to put items on. Black does not come out so be careful not to ruin a plastic sink or drip on the floor or rug.

There aren't any gray shades that a readily available for beards. You are going to have to use peroxide to remove the color from your beard;this might be something by a professional hair colorist because you can get serious burns if you are not careful.

You need to find hair bleach, do not use household or you will loose your beard. Look around at your local stores, or ask a beautician.

go to a beauty supply store and buy some bleach and 40vol. developer(peroxide), leave on for 30-45min., get a violet base toner and a 10vol. developer(peroxide) put that on your beard for 25-30min. or you can go to a professional.

THE ONLY WAY TO GET HAIR FROM ANY COLOR TO WHITE (WITHOUT PIGMENT) IS TO BLEACH IT. THIS IS DANGEROUS AROUND THE FACE BECAUSE IT MIGHT BURN YOUR SKIN AND BE VERY IRRITATING. ONCE YOU BLEACH YOU WOULD WANT TO TONE IT WITH A LIGHT COLOR, I WOULD GET A PROFESSIONAL CONSULT AND GO TO A PROFESSIONAL SALON SUPPLY STORE
