Firstly, I don't really recommend you download and install 'K-Lite Mega Codec pack 1.53' if you simply want to play m4a files. This is really bulky and a very over the top solution to the problem.

Satsuki Decoder Pack isn't meant to be too bad, you can get that here: http://yatoshi.com/en/index.php I believe the CoreAAC filter will work at well, avaliable at: http://rarewares.org/aac.html

If you willing to pay 3ivx is apparently very good and it claims:

"The 3ivx decoder plays back most MPEG-4 files (including MP4, M4A, 3GP and MOV files) with MPEG-4 AAC Audio and MPEG-4 Video (such as DivX 3, 4 and 5, Apple MPEG-4, Philips MPEG-4 and XviD) using Windows Media Player or other compatible players."

However, it costs US$ 6.95 but you can download a trial at:

http://www.3ivx.com/download/

Otherwise, just stop using WMP, musikCube is light and free ( http://www.musikcube.com/ ) and there is a free plugin to allow it to play m4a files!

The source link should give some good information with most of this.

Anyway, good luck with all that!

Try this: download the K-Lite Mega Codec pack 1.53 from the site: free-codecs.com. This codec pack support lots of multimedia file format. This pack is free and easy to use (for me), just download and install, directx 8.1 or above is required. After installed, you should set up this software to prevent conflict in playing file with the WMP of windows.
