Their looks should not have any bearing on being taken seriously. It goes by ability and how well they do their job. Profesionalism is the key and I know of a few good female officers who are easy on the eyes but what impressed me was their confidence and demeanor.

I am a female and I have been in law enforcement for over 8 years now. Sorry to say this, but yes, attractive female cops are not taken as seriously as our male counterparts. A woman in law enforcement would have to be either naive, dumb, blind or all three to deny that you have to prove yourself every day on the job. It is like every other profession, but a little worse because of the types of men we usually have to deal with on the job.
Every week, I get tons of comments from men asking me to lock them up, asking me if I can fire my weapon, etc etc. When I was new on the block, I would get offended, but now, unless its someone I am arresting, I just laugh it off because I know what I can do and I realize that I am a capable officer. If you get angry, then they have won the game.
As far as promotions are concerned, it's like any other position in this country. It's about politics. No, women are not stuck doing "meter-maid" duties (by the way, it's called parking enforcement). You have to demand respect and work hard to prove that you are capable of doing this job and you can get promoted and respected. And remember, this does not just apply to cops. A woman in a position of power is always going to have prove herself more so than a man in order to demand respect.

Female officers get just about the same as the male officers. Police Officers are Police Officers. They demand authority regardless of whatever their gender may be. I know around here the female officers are that female officers, not meter maids or behind a desk.
I know from personal experience that if you are willing to do the job and do it well your colleagues and the public will respect you more. I refuse to do desk duty and won't just because "I'm a woman," granted I don't think I count as I don' find myself "attractive" as I am sure you mean. I am not tall blond, and busty...lol.
Believe me you don't want to mess with me just as you don't want to mess with any male officer. I went through the same training and have the same amount of brass than they do.
As for baldguy642000, he actually has it wrong. Female officers are LESS likely to use deadly and excessive force than that of their male counterparts. Its a proven fact. More and more departments wish to hire female officers due to this and their role in community policing, which is quickly becoming the standard across the country.

I'm a civilian, but when I see a policeperson, I don't think one iota about gender. A female cop has all the same authority as a male cop, and until you asked this, I'd never thought of the two as different. Da police is da police!

Depends on the agency. My cousin was an attactive female Delaware State Trooper. She was taken very seriously and highly respected. She was killed in the line of duty on February 6th 2001.

I work in the security industry and the attractive female cops all seem to have a chip on their shoulder, so you should take them seriously.

I used to work-out with a gorgeous NJ state LEO. I can't tell you how much respect she received, but she performed the same job as the men.

I don't know about respected, but they should be feared. There are studies that say that female comps are more likely to use deadly force when arresting you than male cops.

Those are the ones who lull into a false sense of superiority and the person in question usually gets an *** whipping. Yeah, we take them serious in NYC.
