Here are some ideas of what you can do. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art
Sony Bldg
Rockefeller Center
Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.

CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.

WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.

THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers

SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!

These should put an awesome smile on your face. Bring your camera and takes lots of photos to remember your trip. You'll have a blast! OH...BUY this weekly magazine: TIMEOUT NEW YORK on any newstand to see what's going on each week/day. :)

I love New York. You can spend easily a week discovering the city. July can be very hot, bring comforted clothes and be prepared to walk a lot. I recommend a walk on the Central Park (South area) followed by a window shopping on the Fifth Avenue. If you like museums visit the Metropolitan, the Guggenheim and the Natural History with the Planetarium. If you like the crowds and the tourist areas walk on Broadway passing Times Square, enter Toy's are Us is spectacular. In Broadway you can find an variety of restaurants, stores and of course Broadway Shows. I also recommend a visit to the Soho, Greenwich Village, Columbia University, Wall Street area, Empire State Building, Rockefeller's Center and Gran Central Station. A ride in the subway and a ferry to the Statue of Liberty are indispensables to.

Shows are good, there are hundreds of museums. For a first timer, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or Natural History are awesome if you want culture. Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Central Park. Lots to do. www.nyc.gov The third thing down has a things to do calender, you can show up and be just like one of us. NY state also has a lot to offer upstate as well, lots of trees and a ton of stuff to do, hard to go to those if you only have a few days. The weather is anywhere from 75 to 100F and sunny most of the time.
P.S. Bring your pocket book, NYC is REALLY expensive.

Nah, it's the most boring place on earth. There are only about 16 million people there, and not a single one of them is interesting.
Sorry, sorry....

New York is awesome. It may be the coolest place on Earth.
If you want a true New York experience, hit the Deli.
Did you see "When Harry Met Sally"?
Remember the deli scene with Meg Ryan? That happened at Katz Deli, 205 East Houston Street.

If you're a Woody Allen fan, hit the Carnegie Deli, 55th and Seventh Avenue

New York is hot and muggy during most of July. The concrete sucks in all the heat and the buildings form canyons that trap it.

New York has a great tourism website:

Are you kidding? Is there anything to do in Manhattan?

Well, the weather should be nice and warm. I dont know how old you are, but there are literally thousands restaurants, clubs, and bars to choose from at night.

During the day there are museums--with some of the most famous artwork in the world.

Or, dress up and go uptown to the super fancy department stores (like Bergdorf Goodman) and window-shop.

Have fun!

It's the most incredible city on earth---you could spend your entire visit time just standing on the sidewalk watching the
sites and not get bored. However, there are thousands of things to see and do that will amaze and entertain you.
Plan on the weather being hot and sticky (humid) and dress
accordingly.
Word of caution: be prepared for lots of walking as it is best
way to get around in NY, Enjoy

The weather is fine that time of year, just stagnant because it's the city. I haven't seen a show in two+ years, and don't remember anything directly around the theater. If you explore be careful. Try asking someone at the show for opinions and if you walk around, keep your head on a swivel and your valuables in front of you.

No, there's nothing to do there.
New York is a small hick town that closes down at 9:00 P.M.
I suggest you go to Otisville, Michigan, for the action and the night-life.
