They will be coming out with a diesel for the US soon...the problem right now is that thier diesels are not meeting the US's EPA standards and once they get that problem licked the diesel will return

Strange you should ask this as I asked that very same question of someone I know who works for VW of America. The current TDi engine (1.9 & 2.0) will no longer be sold once the Mark IV Jetta (wagon) and Golf are completely phased out of the market which will happen sometime in 2007. This has nothing to do with the emmissions of the engines themselves but rather the quality of diesel fuel available in North America, it contains far too much sulpher. New fuel standards are coming into effect at the end of 2007 and VW doesn't have a new diesel engine available to comply. The plan is to drop the engines and a new engine should follow by late 2008 or early 2009.

Zero is right, since diesel is barely gaining any ground in US, and actually loosing to some competing gasoline driven engine technology in Europe VW is considering switching a lot of the production engines from being TDI into the super/turbo charged engines that are now in a VW Golf GT in Europe. In any case they will still make TDI, however they may stop importing them to US. The new turbo/super is awesome tho! It gets great gas mileage and tons of power, it's only a 1.6liter engine! But it out runs most lower price range cars anywhere. I am just wondering why they didn't do this earlier, cause well it's a pretty obvious but very efficient combination. If I had the money all my cars would have had that.

VW is going to introduce a major redesign of its diesel engine in 2008. Supposed to be significantly cleaner than the present design, and tailored to the new clean low sulphur diesel fuel that will soon be available in the USA fall of 2006. I seem to recall hearing that there will be an extended interruption in diesel engine production as the plant gets retooled. Another problem is that the present VW diesel will not meet the new 2007 clean air standards. That may temproarily prevent them from selling diesels until 2008, at least in some states.

Yes VW still makes TDI's in all there new line up. They are a direct injected diesel which eliminates that noisy pump they used to have which gives the car more power and less stall.

I think vw will not stop making TDI ' s for at list 2 reasons : 1 the TDI motors are very economical, reliable and powerfull , and , 2, everybody who had a tdi once ,always want a tdi , so it ' s impossible to stop putting turbines on diesels.

Vw will continue to make the TDi the car sells well and is a money maker for them. The just cant sell the car in California because of emission laws.
