On a serious, analytical level, religion is a want. You will not die without it. You can live equally well with or without it, but it is innate in human nature. The desire to understand everything is a need in the human mind. Religion satisfies that need, but is not the need itself.
Food is a need. Lobster is a want. Understanding is food, religion is lobster. For some, science is the lobster. Get it?

Modern Anthropology says it's a need. We need to have something that would explain where we've come from, a provider of solutions to our problems, an assurance after we die. etc..
Futurists have said that modern science would put an end to religion due to its deterministic nature. But up till today there are still many scientists that still believe in God.

We all have what I call the "God-void" - it can't be filled with religions though, it can only be filled with Jesus Christ. It's built in all of us as God knits us in the womb. It's like a homing device, so that we will have a desire to seek Him. All the religions came about as people tried to seek Him, but instead of listening with their spirits, they listened with their own wisdom and look at the state of the world today! Too many religions and not enough people who have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Religion is a practice, but the real thing is Faith in the Creator, a gift from the Creator to those He calls. Hope you get the call.

I think its a need from the people who need guidance or an answer to the eternal question that represents their existence, not everyone requires one though; some people, like me, we're fine with thinking that life is just a gathering of senseless, random circumstances.

Religions were invented by the rich to control the poor people so they could control them and have order in society.

I think for all its a need: what floats your boat why change it? If it's not broken why fix it? People seem to need and want something more powerful in their life to complete them. Which I would believe is why God is so prevelant in these forums.
