it could mean quite a few things, maybe he's just getting lazy at his age, 12 years old is equal to around 70 or so in human years and at that age some seniors could be careless about their hygiene (lol) so it's possible. i would clean him yourself (give him a bath) and chalk it all up to old age.
good luck

Yes, like the other person said, get his butt shaved. I have a long-haired cat and this only happens when he gets constipated. Is your cat eating anything different? The thing is, if you give him "wet" food to counteract the problem, he may get diahrrea. I would just give him his regular dry food (if that's what he normally has), and just a tiny bit of wet food to see if it makes a difference. And make sure he's getting enough water. Get the butt shaved, though, and your problem will be instantly solved. My cat got a "lion cut" the other day because his hair had become sort of matted and he's so hot during the summer.

Is he long haired--is "it" getting stuck in the hair? I have a cat that has that problem. Is he overweight and can't (I know, this is disgusting!) get his mouth to his butt to clean himsel--my daughter's cat. Otherwise, sounds like he is a bit constipated increased moisture might help. Check with you vet--I think cats can have human fiber supplement (i.e. Metamucil) in small quanities, but check with your vet

I agree with lazy, it's best to have him checked out by a vet at his age. But also some of the others made reference to the hair and I was thinking if he has long hair, sometimes this happens. But still, safest best is just have him checked out by a vet.

I don't think there is anything wrong with him! My cat sometimes has that and I asked the vet about it and he said it didn't mean anything. And some cats can't eat moisture, it makes them sick.

He is probably dehydrated, give him more to drink. He may be to old to properly groom himself, you may need to help him out. You can also go to a groomer and have the hair trimmed around his hind quarters.

At that age his anal sphincter may be weakening and he cannot squeeze it shut tight enough to close it and to disengage his feces from his body... he may need your assistance now... be sure to keep his litter box clean of any feces... and keep a box of the baby diaper wipes next to his litter box to use to wipe him and then put them in a plastic waste bag next to the litter box... that you can keep tied shut in-between times... Take good care of him... so he does not get an infection from the litter box thru his opened and weakened anal sphincter.

Sounds like he may need more moisture in his diet. Try some moist canned Friskies or other brand.

He's getting old and isn't as clean as he use to be. If he's long haired have him groomed and his hair on his hind legs and behind trimmed. That will help.

He's constipated. He needs to get more water. Call the vet and ask what else you can do.
