So many of you answered and mirrored the same thoughts - God just is becuz he is eternal. Makes it hard to choose an answer.

I also like the answers of simply say I do not know, although it doesn't solve anything in his mind.

I have to read the answers again to choose

Be honest. Say, "I don't know."

Its an answer I wish Christianity wouldn't be afraid of.

Simple, God is not a creation. He is the Creator.

JOHN 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Your son's curiosity will not be passified. Do not try to. In stead, encourage Him. Christ is already drawing him. Start reading the Bible, (preferable the King James Version) to him. Feed his hunger for Christ.

Remember, emphasize Christ. Knowing about God alone does not save. The Father has ordained that all be saved throught Christ's blood.

I teach K-1 Sunday school - try this

God was not created: he has always existed. This is impossible for us to understand because everything else we know about has a beginning and an end. He always was, and he will always be. Imagine going on a deep-sea dive and being able to talk to the fish at the bottom or the sea. Imagine trying to explain to the fish what life is like for humans above the surface of the water and on land. The fish would not be able to understand, no matter how hard you tried to explain it. Everything the fish knows is in the water. You can breathe air and walk on the land, but the fish knows nothing about that. So the fish thinks it's silly or impossible. That is the way it is with God. God created everything we know, including time. Beginnings and endings are limitations of our world, but not of God. That is one of the great things about him -- he is so much greater than we are!

Key verse - In the beginning the WORD already existed. He was with God, and he was God. he was in the beginning with God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make.
John 1:1-3

Its like you are asking me that my brother gave birth to a child, is it male or female? Its the Chracterstic of male that he does not give birth. If he gives birth then he is not male. God is Eternal, because its the characteristic of God that HE IS ETERNAL. If He is not eternal, that means He is not God.

God has to be Eternal then otherwise He would have a beginning. Suppose, we say God had a beginning, then there was a time when God did not exist. It means that he needed somebody else to make him exist. So there is somebody else who is God, not him. but as we agreed that there is only one God, therefore, there is no one else who make Him exist.

When we say that God cannot be born, we are also saying that a creator cannot becomes his creation, because creation means what is in need of a creator. To be a creature of God, mean there had to be someone to create you. So if God becomes his creation, it means now he is in need of a creator. And this is absudity! As we know, A creation is not eternal. An eternal being is uncreated. We can conclude that the one God who is uncreated, has to be Eternal.

It follows by logical necessity that if God is one, and if He is eternal, Then obviously He does not beget , Nor is he begotten. Because if He beget, then He will have a child and the child will have to be God-like. So there will then be two Gods. Since we agreed that there is only one God, you cannot have two. OR If he was begotten, that means he would have father. Then the father will be older than him and more eternal than him. and we cannot have one who is more eternal than "ETERNAL"

==============================...

"Say: He is Allah, The One and Only. "Allah, the Eternal, Absolute.
"He begets not, nor is He begotten. And there is none like unto Him."
[Quran 112:1-4]

==============================...

THERE IS ONE CREATOR, AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS HIS CREATION. THATS IT. !!!

>>>>>>>>>>>**************

EDIT ..>>> TO SALIENT

Yes God created nature.

GOD IS NATURAL! God has power over all things. According to the Quran, God is not supernatural. Supernatural means that there is a nature and then there is a God. God created nature. God will never say opposite of the nature. God created the innate nature in the human beings. One of the attributes given to God is "Fatir" means creator and former . The Sun, The Moon and all the planets are following nature. The Same way Allah is too natural.

Al-Quran (33:62)
You will never find a change in the nature of Allah.

----------

God is much more complex than nature because Quran says there is nothing like HIM. He is far superior and not bound by any space time dimension. and human mind cannot understand Him except that He is one and only . alone. and what else He has told us in revelations.

Hope this answers.

Islam has logical answers.

I don't know if you believe the bible is Gods word or not but His word says "I AM WHO I AM" Exodus 3:14 Meaning He "was is and is to come" Revelations 4:8 He created everything and we wont be able to grasp what eternity really means until we are in heaven with Him. He was before there was anything. How old is your son. What a big question! Hope it helps

In the beginning was the word, the word was with God and the word was God(John 1:1).He was in the beginning with God.(John 1:2).All things were made through him and without him nothing was made(John 1:3).In him was life, and the life was the light of men.(John1:4). In the beginning God created heaven and earth (Genesis 1:1).And God said to Moses,"I am who I am." And he said,"Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, "I am has sent me to you(Exodus 3:14).
Tell your son that God is there always, he has no beginning or end. He is eternal and nobody made him, on the contrary he made everything.Teach your children from youth,so they learn the ways of the Lord.

If a god created nature, that god would need to be at least as complex as nature, if god does not need to be created, then neither does nature.

If your god uniquely created nature then this means that this god must be capable of analyzing and solving the complex problem of constructing complex universes. This means that the creator god must itself be complex. Thus the invocation of God as a solution to the question of complex existence is in reality no solution at all, it merely serves to obfuscate the issues at hand.

It is not possible to wish away this problem by claiming that God is unexplainable or does not require an explanation.

Tell Him that that is one of the great mysteries of the world. But, that you sincerely believe that God is real. And start reading bible stories and make it all real to him. And stop letting them believe in Santa, tooth fairy, so on and on. If they found out later that these things are not real, they will most likely question the existance of God. And, probably have thoughts of whether to trust Mom and Dad.

There's no easy answer to that one.
Most major religions think God is eternal, so technically, has always existed.

The coolest story ever written on the theme is "The Last Question" by Isaac Asimov.

to explain and understand GOD is like plopping dog in front of blackboard and teaching dog calculus.
Whats wrong with saying "I don't know" or "nobody knows"....
seems like an acceptable answer to me.....
don't start making stuff up....
I am agnostic ...but I went to Catholic School in the 50's and early 60's.....and if I asked a nun that question she would reply...."God always was and always will be."
God is not Human is he?...God is something else?
(note that I said something...not someone)
who knows.
But I think it mistake to try to describe in human terms.
I think we are all better off not struggling with the question at all.

You should tell him that you don't know but that.... the people who believe in God probably believe he always existed but if you are like me and don't believe God exist. Tell him that others think he was a man-made idea where back in primitive times they made him up to explain why things happened, like why it rained or why people got sick or died.
