Apart from cranes, do they use sliding rails and jacks?

To answer the question...

Yes, there a number of ways not including cranes to re-rail cars.

Re-railing frogs are one way... Jacks and wood blocks are also used, as well as reverse movements to pull the equipment back onto the rail.

Scrapping is only done if the car is damaged heavily and condemned on site.

If the derailment happens on a switch at slow speeds, a reverse movement with care and extra handeling, will re rail the train. this only applies to facing point moves (when a locomotive is/was facing the points). I'm not sure if they still have these but i've seen trains rerailed from minor single axle derailments with a rerailing frog. this device is mobile and was usually found on the locomotive.

I'm confident that between Obama, Obama care and the ignorant Democrats.....the US economy will be in a total mess withing the next 5 - 10 years and people will end up rioting on the streets (like they've done in Greece and elsewhere)

A friend of mine does recovery for a railway subcontractor.Damaged trains and cars are cut up on site.All goods in train wrecks are deemed as losses.Trains are set on the axles not the tracks.

There are special lifting devices that are placed on the track. This allows them to lift the train and move it to proper position. You cant use a crane in a tunnel (as in Underground metro system).
