In the United States, the government imposes a ridiculously high drinking age so that when you are old enough to drink you kill yourself. There are too many youngin's runnin' around anyhow. A high drinking age just makes alcohol something mysterious and exotic. I think that If they lowered it to an age where you are still living at home with your parents, alcohol wouldn't be such a big deal, and there would be less people doing stupid things on their 21st B-day. My advice is to give you kids a few drinks, let them experience alcohol in a controlled environment, and they are less likely to hurt themselves. My 21st birthday is just around the corner, and honestly all I am excited about is being able to order a beer with dinner and finally do it legally.

In Europe they are taught to respect alcohol, they have wine everyday with meals. If they are in a public setting and act responsibly they won't get arrested and therefore the authorities don't have a problem.
Unfortunately in New Zealand we have a different society which is based on drinking to excess which causes stupidity from both the younger generation to others who you would think should know better.
This is what causes the problems. Its a cultural thing and due more to supervision and a better attitude to drinking than anything else.

Well aren't we the sophisticated European.....
You are all over the place with your statement....
It's good you drink responsibly....would you like your merit badge now or would you rather wait for the BOY SCOUT JAMBOREE?
Are you saying people don't get drunk in Europe?
Re American attitudes....its those PURITAN ROOTS....
Plus we got bible thumpers out the wazoo....
I was Military(USCG) for ten years and it irked me that a 19-20 year old shipmate could not belly up to the bar with the older crew members.
You will see stories about drunken parties at colleges.
That is because there are no older people around.
We got drunk in military but we would not let younger shipmate drink to dangerous level and we sure wouldn't let him wander off.
Your smug superior attitude puts me off.

Americans are somewhat irresponsible, so some laws reflect that; besides, the government is allegedly solicitous for our health. A little wine doesn't hurt...

I hear ya, the legal drinking age is total BS. it pretty much goes to show that the government thinks that young people are stupid. so they have taken it upon themselves to say that until your 21 you have no business drinking. give me a break, and give the youth of america a little more credit than that
