I just always had the feeling that a lot of people who join forget that going to war is a likelihood. They go in for the benefits but don't expect they might have to pay their dues on a battlefield someday.

Amen. I am so sick of Army commercials and recruiters calling me and telling me that I can get tons of money for college and all these benefits, and they never once mention the 2000+ soldiers that have never been able to finish their college career. I am proud of the soldiers who have fought and died in America's wars, but I wish that the government would start making the army look more like an "army" and less like a financial aid program.

I had a really good job and I would have stayed had September 11th not happened. I think that some join forgeting that we are at war or hoping that they wont get sent because they have no other options but everybody in the military has a different backround and a different story. I in no way freeloading. I am alomost constantly busy when I am at work and I work more then twice the amount I did at my civilian job. Even though it sucks sometimes I would do it again because this country would not be the same if it wasnt for our Soldiers, Marines, Airmen and Sailors. You couldnt beat the benefits with a stick but the pay sucks so if you are just in it for freeloading its not really worth it.

With that said does it really matter why they are there? The fact is that they joined knowing that they might have to put their lives on the line for people like you and me someday. Whether they joined for money problems, benefits, family tradition or because they are patriotic they are still the bravest men and women this country has to offer. Who else would move far away from home and put everything on the line for people that they dont even know?

Freeloading? Off what? Do you realize how many military families are on food stamps? How high poverty levels are on military installations? The Benefits are OK, but they are not that great and besides why should they not get benefits? You and every other American are living their life the way they want to because a soldier put his or her life on the line.
I think that a lot of people join because they glorify war and want to become a hero, not because they feel like it is their American duty.

Prior to 9/11 most of us thought that war as not a real possibility in the foreseeable future. Since then we have lived the motto: "We are an Army at war."

It is rather ironic that the day before 9/11 I was predicting that my only real remaining military function was to train my replacement.

One good thing about being at war: the troops we get are people who want to Soldier. The 'just in it for the college money' people are all gone.

PS: The Army has been exceeding recruiting goals. (And if you talk to a recruiter you will learn that there is no shortage of people who want to join the Army - there is a shortage of people who meet the Army's standards.)

Whaaaa? You'd have to be insane to think you could freeload in the army. They're up at like 6am or some crazy time running around all day whether they're in a war or not. Anyway, most people who voluntarily join the army want to go to war anyway, that's the point. Nutty gun lovers out for killin'. The real question should be why don't they put all the prisoners in the army and make them usefull?

Ha...
14 hrs days, little sleep, getting shot, mortared daily, away from family....You bet, I'm Freeloading!

I do know in the past, due in part to slick advertising, the avg 18 year old did not even think he/she would go to war. That was pre 2001. Even the National Guard or reserves does not mean an easy ticket.

They don't forget they there is a chance they could go to war, its the fact that once they return to war that they soon find out that they arnt payed enough for what they do. The fact that football and basketball players become milliners to play games and those who put there lives on the line are payed just enough to survive.

I am certain there is a certain amount of salesmanship with the recruiting practices of recruiters, however if you think those who enlist have no idea of the danger... I would say that is just plain ignorant.

To ask such a question, shows a lack of respect for these individuals who serve to protect the very fabric of our country.

A.F. K9 Military, you are an insult to all branches of the service, you lazy piece of s***.

On the contrary, I feel like most people today join the military only when they have no alternative options. There's a reason why the military has trouble meeting its recruitment target numbers.

Any recruiter worth a damn will make it perfectly clear that going to war is at least a possibility. Mine did. People join for many reasons, college money, family tradition, etc. But when they get deployed, for the most part, they are reliable in their jobs and responsibilities, regardless of their reason for enlisting.
