I am ex military, recently discharged, I think at night lying in bed that I will wake up back in time, back in uniform. I feel like I am going nuts here in the civilian world. I have talked to the National Gaurd, with my type of discharge, I have to wait 12 months and show proof of Alcohol abuse treatment. I have waited for 12 months, so the treatment is thonly thing I really need. I have to many bills right now to cover the medical bills for that. My question is, is it normal for ex military members to long for the moment of getting back in uniform? And to go insane in the civilian world? Well, not really insane, just a little, deppressed is the word. Please help me out if possible. Thank you.

My husband is currently in the national guard getting ready to go active duty. We recently found out that if you are not active duty the military doesn't care one crap about you. Just remember, those who yell the loudest in the military get things done the quickest. my advice, annoy the crap out over everyone involved until they do something about it.

a military wife.

I know exactly how you feel!! I got out of the Corps in 2002, for the wrong reasons. After about 2months I went to see a recruiter with DD-214 in hand and told him to put me on the next bird. Well to my surprise my DD-214 had an error on it. I had an honorable discharge but my re-enlistment code was dishonorable!! The recruiter said that it was an obvious mistake and that I would still have to petition the (a) Naval board but the entire process would take about a year !!! My depression then turned to anger , but what could I do ? There was no way in hell that i would go back in below an E-4, I could handle loosing a rank as long as I was atill an NCO. So I just sucked it up and eventually started to accept that I would be a nasty civilian for the rest of my life, even though I bleed red and gold!!

No, it's not unusual for recently discharged service members to want to get back in uniform. My troop has a good number of people who got out, hated life on the outside, and came back in. After a while, you just get used to the way the military works, and you start to prefer it that way.

I got out in March of this year. I had trouble adjusting for the first few weeks. I missed my 'family'. I know how you feel. I still wear my tags daily as a reminder. Just remember that if you can't do anything about it, it's not worth worrying over. Follow what your mind is telling you and when you are cleared to re-enter, do so if you still feel you should. As for now take care of yourself and build a life as a civilian.

Yes, at times I miss my Military family and my old job. I enjoyed the Military but there is life after you take off the uniform. Try to relax, clear your mind and come up with a game plan for your future.

Occasionally I have dreams of being back in boot camp, then wake up and realize it just was a bad dream.

I dug ditches when I got out and retired as a millionaire at 53. Sounds like you're feeling sorry for yourself suggest you challenge yourself into becoming an entrepreneur (working for yourself). Digging ditches is only temporary if you got guts.
Otherwise you can pull up a seat at the trough with the livestock to be fed, or soar with the eagles!

P.S. I felt sorry for myself but kept taking one step at a time and my last 13 years working (self employed) is when it paid off!

I would restate the insane part. You are really just going through a little with-drawl from what you knew for so long. You may miss the structure or the camaraderie, but obviously you need to find what is missing, the NG might be the place.

I WA S IN THE US NAVY AND YOU GOT USED TO DOING THING DIFFERENTLY IN THE MILITARY AND YOU PROBABLY HAD A VERY DISIPLINED LIFESTYE WHICH IS NOT THE CASE NOW. I WOULD SUGGEST TRYING TO DO WORK SUCH AS POLICE OR SOME KIND OF SECURITY SUPERVISOR TYPE WORK THAT REQUIRES MORE OF A DISIPLINED APPROACH. I HOPE IT HELPS MY FRIEND AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY.
