There are rational solutions to reducing the population growth, but none will be socially acceptable, just look at the resources in heath care and prayer devoted to trying to improve fertility of childless people.

The human race has not so far had any significant natural control of numbers; but we are on a finite planet and we are reducing the carring capacity all the time.

Climate change will seriously damage our ability to feed and house people - this planet will probably only sustainably support <1 billion people in 50 years time.

So how do we get from current population and consumerist growth lifestyle to a sustainable civilisation?

There are social and technical solutions, but few people currently see the need to change. And any problems will affect the poorest, and least represented populations first, so will not get any significant media awareness.

what happens when, as predicted in 20 years, oil, food and water production cannot meet demand?

>>>What are some viable solutions to overpopulation?

The only solution to overpopulation is to put technology into play.

The only solution to population growth is to increase the standard of living. That means increasing life expectancy.

The Professor’s idea is sheer lunacy. Famine has never restricted population growth yet, in fact the exact opposite is true. The more fearful people are that their children will die due to famine the more children they will have. Professor there is a very strong POSITIVE correlation between incidence of famine and population grotwh. The more common famine is the faster the human population grows.

No, and that is a fact, not simply speculation. the world population is stabilising and will begin to decline within 50 years. In 100 years time the world population will be at least 10% smaller than it is now.

Follow the link below to see the UN figures that show that human population has essentially hit maximum and is about to begin falling.

That will never happen. Because as the population increases, the earth is less able to provide. Eventually the population will reach a point where it cannot expand 'cause the earth can no longer provide for more. At that point humans will come up with this cool idea, kill off the sick and old, to make room for more young and healthy. But that will only be a temporary solution. Still the earth can only provide for so much.

Have you been listening to the earth complaining? Various seafood favorites are on the decline due to over fishing. Land animals of all sorts are dwindling in numbers due to over hunting and trapping. Birds too are becoming more scarce due to over hunting and the reduction of habit to farm land, urban sprawl and other forms of human encroachment into the habit wildlife needs.

We humans are far too careless and greedy. We don't know how to respect the land and take good care of it. We think we don't see or feel the negative effects, so it doesn't bother us. Some day though, it will. Someday.

No, there are natural mechanisms such as famine and disease which will prevent us from getting to a state where we're standing shoulder to shoulder. However, it will probably not come to that. As societies prosper, the birthrate generally declines as we have seen in the United States and Europe. This is due to many factors including better access to birth control, declining importance of manual labor, etc. As freedoms and economic prosperity spreads this will happen in developing countries as well. Alternatively populations can be kept in check by strong central governments as was the case with China's one child per family policy.

Well, no...not any time soon...you could fit every person on the planet, standing with plenty of elbo room, in an square field 50 miles on a side.

The viable solution: Education about responsible family planning AAAND....birth control pills, condoms and abortion.

I don't get the whole "must duplicate myself" urge.

to solve overpopulation you simply need to keep the food sources at their natural carrying capacity. Flooding a famined region with food (i.e. Africa) just creates an artificial rise in carrying capacity that can only be sustained if you keep sending the area food. Stop playing god, and stop playing with nature. Let nature take its course and eventually you will reach the plateau, that is, the carrying capacity for Earth.

the human population right now is exponential and out of control. there are a few things working for it like aids and the possible bird flu. It could one day come to the point where resources run out and the population goes crazy leading to wars and the eventually wipe out of the human race.

I dont believe populating and increasing population in the world to be a problem.Note India and China have a population which exceeded the past population many folds. And they still can increase .
The planet is very unpopulated , the USA is scarsely populated. We need more people in the world.Other wise the people going to Hell may out number the people going to heaven.
WE need more believers to go to Heaven;Hence we need a greater population.
