He seems to be a ggod cyclist and is the world champion. But I think he is limited largly to Belgian races only and is completely unsuited to mountain climbs or long races. He also seems to be very dependant on his team pushing him tovthe front of the peloton and their doing the work for him. What is anybody else's view?

There will never be another Eddy Merckx. Tom Boonen is a great sprinter and classics rider. But he can't win the grand tours. He's not a good all around climber. Eddy was able to win classics and grand tours b/c he could climb, sprint and was a very tough competitor. I don't know if the cycling world will ever see anyone like Eddy again b/c of the level of competition has risen to another level. And the length of the season is grueling.

Id agree with the view that he's a great sprinter, and stylish cyclist. Re being an all-rounder (like merckx et al), then not yet, and I think he's settled on being an ace sprinter rather than training to be a tdf or giro winner. So no, not a merckx, but what a great sprint-stage finisher and exciting rider.

Not even close. Merckx was an all-around champ. Boonen is a sprint specialist. Totally different breed.

he is not limited, but he is a sprinter he is no Eddy or lance for that matter, Boonen is awesome on a sprint finish and one day classic, not bad to look at either ;-).

I don't think that he's that good at cycyling and I'm suprised he was chosen as the world champion.
