There's a couple reasons. The Biblical justification comes from 1 Corinthians 7 mainly, but perhaps a couple other places as well. This is where it says priests will be unable to completely devote themselves to God's work if they also have a wife. Keep in mind, however, that for many centuries Catholic priests were allowed to be married. The move towards celibacy ocurred in the Middle Ages as a reaction to severe corruption and nepotism within the Church. This, then, is the real catalyst; the Biblical passages are simply justification. As further proof, note that there are in fact some married Catholic priests today. If a man is a married minister of another faith, then converts to Catholicism and wishes to become a priest, he is allowed to do so and stay married. Thus the objection is not one of a fundamental or even theological nature but more of a practical one.

Because priests are to be like the disciples who were not married. The bible also says that it is better to not be married, but if you truly have a need for companionship & sex then rather than sin you should marry. Priests choose to sacrifice marriage for the love of God & the calling they hear. Only Catholic priests do not marry.

The Catholic religion added to the original Bible and they say a priest shouldn't be married.
Of course the original interpretation of the Bible says that nothing should be added or deleted from Jesus' testimony but they did it anyway.
So did the Mormons - the cover of their books reads "another testament..." duh.
Oh...I digress.
sorry

Jesus wasn't married. Hmmmm. let's see, a 32 year old man, living with 13 men and one woman who was always in their company..what would you call him today? Yes, you would swear he was gay..be honest here, please. And, in fact, he could well have been. Shouldn't be a big deal...he still did what he was supposed to do, but I am sure that galls many of the so-called Christians here.
Catholic priests are supposed to put their flock BEFORE all else. If they were married with kids, it would be difficult to minister to the sick and dying (contagion).. or so they say. Seems a bit archaic to me, and certainly leads to all kinds of problems.

nowhere in the bible that i know of does it say a priest cannot be married. i don't know where the catholics came up with that. the bible doesn't say that a priest can't get married. what's more it's un-natural. the continual burning within catholic priests is not good for their minds and has led to countless cases of child molestation.

Some Pope decided that he didn't want to burden a wife with all the Pope stuff he would have to do, in other words. He thought it wouldn't be a satisfying life style for her. So he decided that HE wouldn't get married. And from then on, all men of the cloth didn't do it anymore. Dumb reason really. It was only the one Pope who didn't want to get married, He didn't care if the other wanted to or not. it was a personal decision.

Actually, some people say he was married and it depends on which religion you're talking about.
In Judaism, if the temple were rebuilt, our priests would be married and it's considered a sin not to be married and try to reproduce at least once.

You know that's interesting, because during the time of the early christians, priests had wives and kids. There have been documents found that prove it. I don't know why they are not allowed to do it now. Obviously the vow of celibacy doesn't work if there are so many preying on children. Instead of being relocated, they should be excommunicated and stripped of their title and allowed to marry. I don't know if that helps any...?

Jesus was married. Some religions believe that if the priest gets married he might put his wife and family before his duties to god. and that would be bad for the church and the people who need guidance.

Catholic priests can't get married. Reverends, priests and pastors from other faiths can. According to history, Catholic priests were supposed to devote their lives to the calling so much that marriage fell to the wayside.
